Ernie Southern and the Deltaholics - Every Day is a Fight (5 Stars!)

.
A couple years ago, I had the opportunity to review Ernie Southern's album Prozac Blues. The blues grooves and humor ("Prozac Blues, "Ain't Goin' Bald") on that album made me a fan and I was glad to see that he has a new album called Every Day is a Fight.

The album opens with the title track, which is a slow groove that would brilliant coming from someone's front porch. Southern's National Resophonic guitars are not only made to play the blues, but also a treat for the ears. You need look no further than his solo on "I Wanna Kill Somebody" to realize this. And speaking of a treat for the ears: Pompano Pete de Stefano's work on the harmonica is just that. This is clearly a guy that has been playing the blues for so long it's in his blood.

If you want a sample of what this band is all about, check out "Red Hot Delta Blues." In this tune, Ernie Southern not only mentions some of the great Delta blues artists, he and the band also do a pretty good job of playing them. While the entire album is filled with Delta blues, another shining example is "Someone with Brains." The easygoing guitar and excellent harp in this song will make you wish you had a stompbox on which to keep the beat. If you have one handy, by all means use it.

Ernie Southern continues to be the real deal. If you are looking for nothin' but the blues, then you need to check this guy out. Southern clearly has been steeped in the blues. And we the listeners reap the reward when we get to hear his soulful tunes.
