Paul McCartney & Wings - Band on the Run Remastered

As a youth, the title track to Paul McCartney & Wings' Band on the Run fascinated me to no end. Not being wise in the ways of the world yet, it was both intriguing and frustrating trying to figure out why this famous former Beatle was in a band that was seemingly on the lam. Of course, it was always merely nothing more than lyrical poppycock. But it was still cool for some reason.

It's fairly common knowledge that McCartney was the heart of The Beatles, whereas John Lennon was more of the brain. Yet while Lennon excelled at writing biting lyrics, McCartney equally overachieved when creating memorable melodies. Band on the Run isn't about much, word-wise even all these years after it was first released in 1973. This edition comes with an added bonus disc, as well as DVD, and still sounds great to modern ears.

Some have suggested that McCartney created this album to prove to his critics that he could make great music even as a solo artist. And he easily succeeded, even if such was the case. Whether singing easygoing country music with Country Dreamer, appropriately featuring overt pedal steel guitar, or rocking out, as on the pun-y titled Helen Wheels, McCartney makes musical creativity seem easy too easy.

This set's bonus disc mostly includes alternate takes of album cuts. However, Zoo Gang is a cool new instrumental. The DVD is also a fine accompanying visual document, packed with music videos before music videos were almost an industry unto themselves.

It's strange to be writing this review on the anniversary of Lennon's death. Lennon, much like one of his most famous disciples, Bono, was more than just a rock star. Lennon spoke out forcefully regarding issues of social justice and in stark contrast to most celebrities did so intelligently. Bono is also a man that should be taken seriously when he offers any social commentary. McCartney, on the other hand, is a pop music craftsman. Sure, he's written more than his share of silly love songs. Yet he's also written some of the best pop songs ever. Band on the Run reveals the freshly ex-Beatle at the top of his game. Go ahead and put this CD on and enjoy it. Just don't try and think too deeply about it.
