Beady Eye - Different Gear, Still Speeding

by Kevin Wierzbicki

.
With apologies to Shakespeare, "Would an Oasis by any other name still sound as sweet?" Beady Eye in make-up---Liam Gallagher, Gem Archer, Andy Bell and Chris Sharrock---is essentially Oasis without Noel Gallagher. No surprise then that Different Gear, Still Speeding sounds like Oasis without Noel Gallagher. There's still plenty of Beatles-love to be heard on songs like "Wind Up Dream" and especially on the "Instant Karma"-like "The Roller" where Liam slips into John Lennon mode. The boys give a nod to the Rolling Stones here too where "Bring the Light" and "Standing on the Edge of the Noise" both pay homage to the "other" giant of the British Invasion. Oddly enough, or perhaps in complete accordance with Gallagher's sense of humor, "Beatles and Stones" sounds nothing like either band. Beady Eye has not gone out of the way to change their sound drastically from that of Oasis. With the possible exception of the aforementioned "The Roller" though, there are no potential classic Oasis-sounding signature tunes here so you shouldn't expect a "Champagne Supernova" or a "Wonderwall" from this set. But if you've enjoyed the last few Oasis albums you'll want to add this debut from Beady Eye to your collection.
