Day in Pop Report for 05/07/2012
Sorry, we could not do a full update today due to an extended power outage. We do have some stories from our partners. We should be back to normal tomorrow.
According to our sources, RiRi called in sick for the dress rehearsal, which is done live in front of a studio audience right before the actual show. We're told Michaels takes dress rehearsals very seriously and was quite upset when Rihanna bailed at the last minute. Our sources say that in her place, Rihanna's choreographer danced to her songs. When Rihanna showed up later looking just fine, we're told the staff was shocked ... and felt she didn't appear sick enough to have missed the dress rehearsal ... though no one from the show called her on it. According to our sources, once the live show got going, Rihanna was seen eating an apple and walking around in between songs ... which bothered several staffers because she did not seem ill at all. We're told producers can't even remember the last time someone has skipped the dress rehearsal. Sources close to Rihanna tell TMZ she went through every rehearsal except the dress rehearsal (which she was in the building for) because she just felt too ill to do it. We're told RiRi had a doctor come to her dressing room before the show and administer a shot of penicillin before she went on. more on this story
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... a man was driving last night near the intersection of Crescent Heights and Melrose Blvd. when he claims he was sideswiped by a Range Rover that was trying to pass him on the right. According to our sources, when the SUV didn't stop, the guy called police and reported the hit and run. But the guy didn't let it go there. According to our sources, he began to follow the SUV himself (which wasn't difficult because there was traffic). We're told cops responded to the scene and even dispatched a police helicopter to track the SUV, unsure of how severe the accident was. When cops finally caught up to the Range Rover, we're told the driver was none other than Bynes ... who told police she had no idea she had struck another vehicle. Our sources say the damage to Bynes' SUV was so minimal, it is possible she didn't feel the accident. Law enforcement sources tell us Amanda was very cooperative with police and cops had her exchange information with the other driver. We're told she was not given a citation and cops will not be investigating the incident further. Bynes was arrested for DUI last month after she clipped a cop car. more on this story
We broke the story ... Thaer Kamal, the manager of the Hookah Lounge -- claimed Lindsay was driving when she struck him on her way out of a nearby club. According to the L.A. County D.A.'s rejection notification, Kamal was a "non-credible witness" who changed his story and refused to cooperate with law enforcement. He refused, among other things, to produce the medical records he claims he had from his alleged hospital visit. Cops also say the surveillance video shows "no collision." We reported this morning the case was almost certainly going to be rejected, but the strong language from the D.A. even surprised us. more on this story
Junior's girlfriend called 911 after discovering his unconscious body around 10AM. She had just returned from the gym. Authorities responded and attempted to revive Seau, but life-saving efforts were unsuccessful. Seau was pronounced dead on the scene soon after. He was 43. Seau's family claims he exhibited no signs of depression before his death -- but has since donated his brain to be studied for concussion research. As we previously reported, the manner in which Seau killed himself -- gunshot to the chest -- is leading many to believe he wanted to leave his brain intact so researchers could study the long-term effects of concussions sustained in the NFL. Listen here.
That's right ... sources close to the Queen of Funk tell TMZ ... Chaka is throwing her hat in the ring to snag one of two vacant spots on Simon Cowell's hit talent show. We're told Chaka -- who has 10 Grammy awards -- is dying to be considered for the lucrative gig and instructed her people to reach out to producers of the show, claiming to be perfect for the part ... toting her 40 plus years of experience in the biz. Don't get too excited funk fans ... there's no word on whether she's actually been called back.
According to our sources, Mayweather asked Bieber four months ago to join him in Las Vegas for the Miguel Cotto fight ... and Bieber, a huge boxing fan, jumped at the opportunity. We're told Floyd and Justin became friends after Floyd saw Justin's movie, "Never Say Never," and reached out to his camp. According to our sources, Floyd decided he wanted to mentor Justin and the two developed a relationship. Our sources say Mayweather tried to impart his work ethic on Justin, basically telling him he could develop the same level of "greatness" Floyd achieved ... if he worked as hard as Floyd did. We're told the two hit it off and Justin tells people he thinks Floyd is just misunderstood ... and that he is a really a "hard-working and clean-cut guy." Several judges would disagree, but whatever ... more on this story
We broke the story ... Kimberly Buffington-Quaid filed for divorce back in March citing irreconcilable differences. It seemed like it was getting contentious because Kim was asking for spousal support but in Dennis' papers ... his lawyer asked the judge to give her squat. Here's how contentious it seemed -- the judge ordered Dennis and Kimberly to cooperate in deciding who got to use the Range Rover while the divorce was pending. But in the new documents Kim made it clear she has no desire to pursue the divorce ... and the judge has agreed to dismiss. So marriage back on ... at least for now. more on this story

After filtering out the BS & triple-checking, @rihanna #WHYBvideo24hrRECORD stands @ 4,937,281! Congrats! Your move, Bieber." TMZ obtained footage ... showing 7'1" Kyrylo Fesenko confronting a group of people outside of Club 23 around 2:45 AM. Sources at the scene tell us ... the whole thing began when one of the clubgoers angrily accused Kyrylo of "bumping into him" ... and then unleashed a flurry of verbal attacks at the NBA star. As Kyrylo tried to walk away from the situation ... the mob grew in numbers and the taunts became louder. That's when Kyrylo's teammate Danny Granger charged towards the clubgoers ... only to be restrained by some of his friends. Multiple bike cops peddled to the scene and diffused the situation ... with Granger and Kyrylo calmly walking away without further incident. FYI -- the Pacers were in town for a playoff game against the Orlando Magic ... and after the incident, a cop jokingly says to the camera guy if he would have known that Pacers were involved in the dust up he would have arrested the guys. Clearly, a Magic fan. A rep for the Pacers tells TMZ ... "Our players were provoked into a verbal confrontation and ended up walking away from the confrontation. To make something more out of this than what it was is ludicrous." See video here.

In his first hour-long special, Chicago-bred, New York-based Buress brings his celebrated deadpan wit to life's absurdities with stories of his three-cop jaywalking bust in Montreal, a bloodless airport shoot-out, and various late nights with questionable women. In front of a live audience at the Gramercy Theatre in New York, Buress re-imagines hardcore rappers as real estate agents, skewers grown men who can't hold their liquor, and, as an enterprising reporter actually wrote, performs "comedic jokes related to personal stories, current events, the streets, and even food." The Hannibal Buress: Animal Furnace extended and uncensored DVD, featuring 20 minutes of material not seen in the broadcast, will be released on May 22 by Comedy Central Home Entertainment. The bonus features include "A Week To Kill," a behind-the-scenes documentary that takes a look at how Buress spent the week before the filming of the comedy special. In addition, Comedy Central Records will release the extended and uncensored Hannibal Buress: Animal Furnace CD on May 22. more on this story

Scott's lawyer tells TMZ, "Any charges that were filed against Scott were dismissed and/or rejected by the prosecutor due to insufficient evidence." As we first reported, Scott was arrested April 6th after allegedly grabbing his girlfriend by the throat in a drunken fit of rage -- and pulling her out of her car. Police observed several signs of injury on Scott's GF when they responded to the scene -- but she refused to press charges. Scott has continually denied ever harming her. Scott's lawyer adds, "Scott will now turn his attention to the foreclosure action that was brought against him." more on this story
TMZ spoke with former Chargers nose guard Reuben Davis -- who played for the Bolts from '94 to '99. When we asked about the curse, Davis couldn't have been more blunt -- "It's kind of like a Final Destination movie ... I feel we might be cursed and it's scary." The 1994 Chargers had an amazing season -- winning the AFC playing in the Super Bowl ... only to lose to the 49ers. Since the loss, 8 members of the team have died under the age of 45. "Ever since then it has been downhill," Reuben says ... adding, "At the end we didn't win the Super Bowl and now this, it's just scary and I have no answer." But, Reuben thinks the surviving members of the team can break the curse if they stick together ... telling us, "Every year the Chargers have an alumni weekend ... maybe we need to reach out to the remaining players and all agree to get together as a group." "It's just scary." more on this story
Ashley was out in L.A. Wednesday, and we asked what advice she had for her ex -- who's still sitting in jail following the April 22nd domestic violence arrest -- and she responded, "Rehab." It's unclear if Ashley believes Lane needs rehab for substance abuse or anger problems ... or both. As for Lane's accusations Ashley had sent him incriminating text messages -- Ashley says Lane's full of crap ... no such texts exist. more on this story
Federleezy is being sued by Joseph Malek ... who claims Britney's ex moved in to his mansion in Tarzana, CA back in 2008 ... wrecked the place ... and then bolted without forking over a check for 7 months of rent. Malek had threatened Federline with legal action back in 2009 ... claiming KFed turned the sprawling Valley property into a cigarette-riddled, spit-stained dump ... complete with broken smoke detectors and glass bottles littered all over the yard. Malek had previously claimed KFed caused more than $110k in damage -- and now he wants a judge to force the former rapper to pay up. more on this story
TMZ broke the story ... Hill is accused of choking his girlfriend during a nuclear argument back in February. Hill has denied the allegations. After Hill was taken into custody, he immediately posted the $5,000 bond and was immediately released. The judge set no travel restrictions on his bond -- so the case shouldn't affect his playoff run. But the judge did impose a protective order -- barring Hill from contacting or going anywhere near his ex. See the mug shot here.
