Day in Pop Report for 11/11/2014
A press release promises more than just one performance from Swift, though it's unclear how many it will entail at the moment. Entertainment Tonight co-host Kevin Frazier and The Insider co-host Thea Andrews will man the anchor desk for the broadcast, which will begin at 9 a.m. ET and will go until noon. Other performances during the broadcast on CBS will include renditions of songs from the Broadway musicals Matilda and Pippin. As usual, the broadcast will also feature the many colorful balloons and floats for which the parade has been known since its inception. Read more here.
Produced by DJ Mustard, the song is an uptempo party anthem about a city known for its entertainment industry and dependence on automotive transportation, which the video takes to its logical conclusion: a party bus filled with celebrities. Fergie has clearly called in a few favors on this one: the bus teems with cameos, including Chelsea Handler, Hilary Swank, DJ Mustard, Sevyn Streeter, Kelly Osbourne, and Cypress Hill's Sen Dog, all dancing their butts off to Mustard's neon-streaked synths. Not resting on any laurels, Fergie is working with Mike WiLL Made-It, Rae Sremmurd and will.i.am to develop her first album since 2006, due out in 2015. Watch the video here.
Currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer, Shaw brought along a sign she made that read, "Chemo this morning, Garth tonightEnjoying 'The Dance.'" As Brooks was singing "The Dance," Shaw's sign appeared on the video screen, which elicited cheers from the audience. The sign also grabbed Brooks' attention. Brooks walked to the front of the stage where she's standing, sat down and continued singing directly to her. He then passed her his guitar, stood back up and delivered a series of rousing, off-the-cuff remarks about faith, helping hands, the strength of a room full of people and, ultimately, how all that can add up to "kick[ing] cancer's a**." Don't believe him? Just watch. He'll see you in the stretch limo in Harlem, Hollywood or Jackson, Miss. With the track came news that Ronson's new album, Uptown Special, will be out on Jan. 27, 2015. It's the follow-up to his 2010 album, Record Collection. The album features lyrics from Ronson's favorite author, Michael Chabon and special guests like Tame Impala's Kevin Parker, who appears on three songs, and 23-year old singer Keyone Starr, who Ronson found while touring gospel choirs in Jackson, MI and also appears on three tracks. The two will hit the Saturday Night Live stage for an episode hosted by Annie star Cameron Diaz to perform the track on Nov. 22. Ronson, who's making his first appearance on SNL, will play an another track from the new album featuring a special guest who has yet to be named. Read more and listen to the track here.
"We write from personal experience, and I think everyone does, so it would be hypocritical of us to be like, 'Oh you can't write about us,'" Styles said. "And she's really good, so they're good songs. So I'm really lucky in that sense." Perhaps, if it was a bad song, Styles would be a lot more upset. Speaking of bad songs, the guys of 1D did admit there's a few songs on their debut that they're not too fond of, including "Stand Up" and "What Makes You Beautiful." Yes, one of their biggest hits. "Who doesn't love a birthday party," Bono told Kevin & Bean this morning via phone from Dublin. "This is where it all began for our band. We know that. You are the big bang. KROQ started U2 out. Without you we'd be nothin'. The U2 frontman continued, "Interpol and Smashing Pumpkins, that's enough reason for me to be there." In total, 18 acts will take the stage - nine on each night - and will also include artists ranging from more classic acts like Tears for Fears to newer musicians, such as Vance Joy. Almost as noteworthy as the flows is how beautifully everything is shot (the clip is directed by Syndrome), from Yelawolf pondering whether he really is "the white devil" in a field, to Joell Ortiz delivering his section from Brooklyn, overlooking the Manhattan skyline from across the water. But it's Shady and Royce da 5'9″ performing in a beautiful abandoned building in Detroit that takes the cake, with Eminem going on for what seems like an unreal amount of time in his portion. The entirety of the video ammounts to a clinic of who Slaughterhouse, Yelawolf and Eminem are, and their continued relevance in the hip-hop world. Namely, it shouldn't take this kind of thing to be talking about them (particularly when Yelawolf has a single, "Till It's Gone," getting play on alternative music stations). The new cypher precedes the release of Eminem's Shady XV, which will feature a number of tracks from Shady Records recording artists, out Nov. 24. Watch the video here.
Though Bieber provided no explanation for his visit on social media, several members of the team tweeted their reactions. "Great to meet @justinbieber tonight at chapel! Thanks for coming!" exclaimed quarterback Bruce Gradkowski. Defensive end Cam Heyward was also pleased to meet the young star: "Didn't know he was a steelers fan, but welcome to steelernation @justinbieber." Read more here.
She's since been released by Irish police, but was taken to a hospital in Limerick and had complained of being ill at a local police station. According to police, they boarded the flight in Shannon, Ireland. The hostess was injured with a possible foot fracture and was taken to a local hospital. A police officer was also injured in the fracas, though not seriously. O'Riordan was detained and questioned for alleged assault. Read more details here.
In a mere four words, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins perfectly summed up his thoughts on it: "Sounds like a fart." Like many others, Hawkins was not a fan of the massively invasive release, where iTunes dropped Songs of Innocence right into everyone's iCloud. In an interview with theMusic.com.au, Hawkins went in on U2's method of release. "I mean, I think they probably thought it was gonna be a great idea: 'Here's the deal: everybody who has an iPhone, gets your record. And they get it for free!'" he said. "And they thought, probably, 'Well that's pretty awesome!' but they didn't really take into consideration the Big Brother feeling that kinda goes along with like, '[In menacing voice] You have the new U2 record.' "You couldn't get rid of it and they actually had to come up with an app to get rid of it, that's horrible." Hawkins didn't stop there. Read more here.
McCreery published the video on his YouTube channel on Monday (the 239th birthday of the Marine Corps), and also in time for today's holiday in the U.S. which celebrates military veterans. The song comes from his most recent album "See You Tonight ". "My family and I have always been thankful for the men and women who protect us and lay down their lives to keep all Americans free," said McCreery in a statement. "When Nathan told me the story about his cousin's husband, I knew it was a very personal way to connect our audiences to the song 'The Dash.' "On this day when we honor our military veterans, I could think of no better way to show my respect than to make sure my fans have a chance to know Andrew and his story. R.I.P. Andrew - there is no way I can truly thank you for your sacrifice, but I can make sure you are never forgotten." The video post also carries the following, which explains the inspiration behind the clip, "While serving in the U.S.M.C. on his second tour in Afghanistan, Lance Cpl. Andrew Carpeter came under enemy fire on Valentine's Day, 2011. He died 5 days later. His wife was carrying this first child, Landon, at the time of Andrew's death. "Andrew was laid to rest in Polk Memorial Gardens just outside Nashville in Columbia TN. The town of Columbia later named a highway in honor of Andrew and his service. "Scotty heard Andrew's story and decided to honor his service by telling his story via his song 'The Dash'". Watch the music video here.
"Where Do Broken Hearts Go" finds the group still pumping out the stadium-ready anthems, which is appropriate, as they need more stadium anthems for their stadium performances. "Now I'm searching every lonely place/ Every corner calling out your name / Trying to find you but I just don't know/ Where do broken hearts go?" the group asks. If only we knew, right? Four is out next week, November 17, and 2015 will see One Direction again hit the road for a world tour of the biggest venues built by man. This will be Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis' follow-up to 2013's Midnight Memories, which has sold more than a million copies in the U.S. alone. Listen to the new track here.
The clip for the 1989 track has her living like a recluse in a mansion too big for this crazy cat lady (look for a cameo from her cute kitty, Olivia Benson) who maybe comes on a bit too strong when it comes to a new suitor. There's indoor bicycle riding, portraiture (Taylor is pretty good with a paintbrush), dog walking, horseback riding and picnicking, which is all fine and dandy to do with a new love. But, then things get a little, well, heated and Taylor flips the handle. Don't text while you're out with Swift. Seriously, the words, "Darling, I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream," never seemed more true. We're talking knives, golf club smashing and poison apples, along with lots of mascara stained tears. Can't say she didn't warn him though. Watch it here.
The shows are part of Chesney's recently announced 2015 Big Revival Tour, which is set to kick off March 26 in Nashville. Church will perform five shows with Chesney, beginning May 9 in Indianapolis and including stops in Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Detroit. "There is something about the way Eric connects with my audience that left me feeling like he made the No Shoes Nation Tour something special!" Chesney said in a press release. "He attacks the stage with so much force - and his songs really speak to the people who're fighting the fight to get by - and I love that about what he does onstage." Church is equally enthusiastic about his touring partner. "Some of the most fun I've ever had on tour was last summer with Kenny," he said. "He's an artist that isn't afraid to let you come full blast and do what you do. It's rare you get to tour with someone you respect and you are friends with. I can't wait to do it again." As Hot New Hip-Hop points out, little is known just yet about each tape; they were uploaded without tracklists and credits. The titles, however, are known: there's Crashing Computers and UFOverload2, both of which clock in at 50 minutes long, plus the 45-minute Mansion Musick, and then the shortest, B4 da EP, at 26 minutes. Currently, each are merely available to stream. As for official release dates where downloads will be available, the Chief noted on social media that Mansion Musick is out Nov. 28, followed by a Christmas-ish release for UFOverload2 and New Year's Day for Crashing Computers. The fourth mixtape has an unknown release date. Of course, given his surprise releases so far, don't be surprised if anything just comes out early for the hell of it. Stream each mixtape in their entirety here.
Minaj pulled out a medley that featured her hits "Super Bass" and "Anaconda" before launching into the new PinkPrint track called "Bed of Lies." For the debut of the song, featuring Skylar Grey behind the piano, Minaj kept things low key, only teasing a bit of the track. In the bit that we do hear, Minaj spends her time talking about a guy she thinks is a fraud, who took advantage of her. Even admitting she thought of taking her own life. "They say, you don't know what you've gone before it's gone," she raps. "They say your darkest hour comes before the dawn." Watch the performance here.
