Day in Pop Report for 10/02/2014
The country singer and member of the Browns said he has been diagnosed with lung cancer. "Hello friends," he said in a video posted on Facebook. "I know many of you have heard rumors that I've been sick. Well, I have, because I've been diagnosed with cancer. I just had my first treatment today and I"m going to beat it with chemo and radiation. I want to thank you for your prayers and support. I'm going to beat this little thing called cancer and I'm going to be all right within the next four months. See you next year." In the caption of the video he wrote that he was told by his doctors to take the next four months off from touring to "focus on chemotherapy and radiation treatments to shrink the cancer cells." "Two weeks ago, I was diagnosed with lung cancer," he wrote. "At that time, I was in shock and scared as I didn't know what that really meant. After testing, the doctors have asked me to take the next four months off from touring and to focus on chemotherapy and radiation treatments to shrink the cancer cells." Read more here.
According to Billboard, Campbell and director James Keach agreed to work with production house the Record Company and have since violated their promises. A complaint was filed against Campbell on Monday (Sept. 29), where the studio claims they were excluded from participating in Campbell's upcoming film. Allegedly both Campbell and the studio agreed they would have exclusive rights to develop the project. Once Campbell's Goodbye Tour started and the film began production, the Record Company was apparently pushed out and Keach, his PCH Films and Glen Campbell Enterprises took over. As a result, the Record Company is suing Campbell and his Glen Campbell Enterprises for breach of contract. Read more here.
The one and a half hour livestreaming celebration gave some context for the new albums with interviews with his collaborators and new band from inside the studio. Prince kept his distance from the fans, appearing only to play his music, which left many fans on Twitter disappointed. But being the once elusive symbol that he is, he surprised fans by calling out Kendrick Lamar to perform with him. Earlier, Prince's engineer played a snippet of Prince's collaboration with Kendrick, saying in reference to the rapper,"Lord have mercy he's a bad man." Prince also had the engineer play his new song with Rita Ora, which he says they have to petition her label to release. If Prince speaks, we must all listen. Watch a snippet of Kendrick's end of the night performance with Prince here.
With this news also came word that the guys would be releasing the Wu-edition Boombot Rex from Boombotix with a limited-edition version of the album. This portable speaker can play music files from any Bluetooth device, and is decorated with the group's "W" logo. The Wu-Boombot will include eight songs from A Better Tomorrow including two instrumentals and an exclusive song, "Big Horn B." Read more here.
An upcoming episode of the show, titled "American Disgrace," will show a fictionalized recreation of the incident, with a preview surfacing promoting the episode. The fight, between Jay Z, Beyonce and Solange, was captured on videotape in an elevator at the Standard Hotel the night of the Met Gala. It ended up prompting a flurry of media coverage, many questioning the strength of Bey and Jay's marriage; meanwhile, the family stood firm in its brief statements on what happened in the elevator, noting that "families have problems and we're no different." Shortly after, Beyonce addressed the song on "Flawless (Remix)," claiming that "of course s**t's gonna go down when there's a billion dollars on an elevator. The show will also take inspiration from recent scandals in the sports world, specifically those involving the Baltimore Ravens' Ray Rice and former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. Check out a preview here.
While fans of the band expressed shock and disbelief at the split across social media, the Yousaf sisters have come out to tell as much of their side of the situation as possible on Krewella's Tumblr blog: "We woke up this morning to the lawsuit Kris filed against us. As you all know, there are two sides to every story. We ask our fans to please be patient and not come to any conclusions until we are able to respond to the lawsuit with the truth. Our team has advised that we don't get into any specifics until we can properly respond to the false claims made-most importantly being that we did not kick Kris out of Krewella, he resigned. We're having a really difficult time today. As we write this letter to you, we are in the studio working on the second album. Please hang in there with us, the truth will eventually come out. Thank you for being so supportive, we love you guys." In addition to the official statement, Yasmine Yousaf (who at one time was in a relationship with Trindl) expressed her own feelings about the situation across two heartfelt posts on her personal Tumblr blog. Revolt TV posted a video from their show in Houston, Texas, that seems to indicate one joint tour won't be the last. "We're tied up tonight," Drake said in the video. "I know there has to be a winner or they want to see a winner, but I've got an idea. I feel like, you put out this Carter V, I put out this Views from the 6, we do this tour again next year and we start that b-h in Houston." Read more here.
After releasing two singles already from the collection, "Therapy" and "Whole Damn Year," Blige graces us with a third taste off the album, the thumping, remix-ready "Nobody But You," which showcases a slight nod toward EDM, but in the classy, identity-maintaining way that only Blige could. The London Sessions album is also slated to feature contributions from executive producer Rodney Jerkins, Disclosure and Naughty Boy. Listen to the new song here.
The 25-date tour, Christmas & Hits Through The Years with Special Guest Linda Davis, will kick off on Nov. 12 in Niagra Falls, Ontario, and run through Dec. 23 in Westbury, N.Y. In an interview with Radio.com last year, Rogers opened up about his career longevity and musical influences. "I'm a country singer whose had a lot of other influences and I think that's why I did songs like 'She Believes In Me,' 'You Decorated My Life,' 'Buy Me a Rose,' because coming from jazz I had that experience of singing that kind of music," he said. "Country music wasn't big in New Jersey and up in this area until I started doing songs like 'Through the Years' and 'She Believes in Me' and I think they saw something in country music they liked. Country music is really the white man's rhythm and blues. It's where all the pain is. Once you get to country you can't go back because there's no other music that's that honest." Check out the tour dates here.
It is even more surprising that actress Jessica Lange - who was actually alive in the 50's (she was born in 1949) - will be singing one of Del Rey's songs. In a tweet today, AHS creator Ryan Murphy let this tidbit loose, though no more information is known than that which he tweeted in response to a fan who told him previews of the upcoming season had her afraid to tune in. It's a funk-leaning two-and-a-half-minute jam where Snoop winkingly raps about his many phases ("I reinvented myself seven times/ Going on eight") and his YouTube channel. He also drops thank you lines like "I wanna thank y'all from the bottoms up / Smoke something, and put your bottoms up," fully aware of the absurdity of the song's premise. Regardless of his motivation, it's good to hear Snoop back at it. The track marks a rare solo rap song from the formerly prolific artist these days, and his upcoming album, produced by Pharrell Williams, will be his first all-rap LP since 2011's Doggumentary. Check out the new song here.
The Canadian production duo Leblanc + Cudmore (Stephen Malkmus + the Jicks, Kevin Drew) helm this clip, in which the New Porns head back to the future as imagined in the 1960s, exploring visuals and ideas that were cutting edge in a time when TVs were black and white and go-go dancers were au courant. Spotted among the artifacts are Buddy Holly glasses, bouffants, polka dots and Mary Quaint inspired dresses. The visual effects cleverly explore surrealist ideas and tricks that cheat the eye to give a creepy impression. Coupled with AC Newman and Kathryn Calder's dead stares directly into the camera, it is highly effective. It is, perhaps, a subtle nod to Halloween, for everyone in this video is dressed in costume and pretending to be someone they are not. Watch the video here.
Inside, Swift addresses her dating life - or rather, her lack thereof. And of all things, she seems to be taking her own lifestyle to task for her single status. "Dating or finding someone is the last thing on my mind, because I can't picture how it could work with the way my life is," Swift said. "I don't know how a guy is supposed to walk next to his girlfriend when there are 20 men with cameras, and he can't protect his girlfriend because that's the life she chose. I just don't see how it could work, so I don't think about it, and I kind of run from it when it presents itself. 'Cause I don't think any guy really They think that they would want to get to know me, and maybe date me, but I don't think they want what comes with it." Swift also talks about going through phases as a teenager, trying to find herself by trying on "different personalities," and how she wishes her fans could know her own struggles with growing up. "If I was doing the sequel to Frozen, I would be a hero," Affleck joked. Affleck's two and a half year-old son specifically loves the song "Let It Go" and wants his dad to sing it for him any chance he gets. Being a good dad, Affleck says he tries to sing the song, but he's not very good at it. His son even tells him that he's not as good as Fallon, who did a kiddie version of the song with Idina Menzel a few months back. "Do it like the man," his son tells him. "The man" being Fallon. Watch it here.
He explained that he'd always wanted to work with the legendary singer and guitarist, and expressed anger at his untimely death: "Why you gotta do that before I do a song with you?" he asked. "I was mad at his people. They didn't see that s-t coming? C'mon! Put the motherf-er on Thorazine. Dose him up so he can stay alive." That's quite a statement from the oddly-braided rapper, known mainly in recent years for his appearances at Gathering of the Juggalos. Coolio went on to offer his opinion on drug use in society. Clearly the scars haven't fully healed: in an interview with Access Hollywood, Diddy made clear that his passion for his former flame burns brighter than ever. Well, at least, his passion for one part of her. "I mean, [her a**] is great. It's a work of art," the man born Sean Combs raved after being shown Lopez's new "Booty" video with Iggy Azalea. "It's something that will go down in history, for real it will." Of course, beauty isn't just skin deep for the Bad Boy star. "But also her talent, her drive, her determination," he added. "She will never give up. She's a great friend of mine, always will be my friend, and I mean [her a**] is just incredible, man." Read more here.
