In the past, record sales were the sole barometer of an artist's impact, but in today's music environment, there is a multitude of ways to gauge who is actually listening. PureVolume, a music-hosting website that allows musicians, signed and unsigned to expose their music, tracks the number of daily and overall plays artists receive. Only 16 artists have the distinction of a million plays on the site that features over 152,000 rising artists.
