Surprise Jimmy Page Jam |
In 1965 the future Led Zeppelin guitarist was paid 13 to play guitar on the title track of Donovan's Sunshine Superman album. So when the iconic folk performer decided to recreate the album live, he invited Page to join him and the London Contemporary Orchestra in the city's Royal Albert Hall.

Guns N' Roses Owe Fans A Reunion |
"I always say, as long as the five of us are alive, it could happen," Adler said. "But now I'm gonna turn that around and say, as long as God is alive, I think it will happen. And the most important thing is GN'R owes it to the fans to do a reunion tour."
In a separate interview with The Jewish Chronicle, Adler said that he hopes frontman Axl Rose and guitarist Slash can put their differences behind them. "Why do you think we were so successful?" he mused. "Because it was the five of us. We had something special. We had a bond. No matter how much (expletive) there's been all these years, there's one thing that Axl and his lawyers can never take away, and that's that we were five brothers who achieved the goals we had since before we were teenagers. And what do brothers do best? They fight with each other! I don't hate them now. My wounds are healed. It's a shame that Axl and Slash won't talk. Every day they don't talk is a day that magic isn't being created. Even if we just did one tour, one record, one song togetherthe gods want to hear it."

Pat Metheny Takes on Classics From Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel an more on What's It All About |
Guitar fans will find special interest in Metheny's sonic choices. He recorded most of the record using an acoustic baritone guitar, with a few notable exceptions. The surf classic, "Pipeline," is played on an acoustic six-string, and The Beatles' "And I Love Her" was recorded with a nylon six-string. More exotic, though, is Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence," which was played on a 42-string (yes, you read that correctly) custom-made "Pikasso" guitar.
"It is a song I have always loved," Metheny said in a press release. "I am a huge fan of Paul Simon, in general. I had been experimenting with a way to play this piece on the Pikasso for a while. The challenges of keeping everything going on that guitar are significant, and the material needs to lend itself to that axe to make it work. In fact, at the core of that instrument is a six-string guitar that, for years, I have had in the same baritone tuning that I used on One Quiet Night (that is where the bass notes come from). This is one of the few tunes on the record where I stay in one key for the whole tune and the way I have that instrument set up is ideal for that kind of an approach."

Historic Day in Beatles History |
The Beatles regrouped from that tragedy and on this day in 1962 went into London's Abbey Road Studios to record for the first time under Martin's direction. They recorded four songs, including "Love Me Do," which would eventually though not from this particular recording become The Beatles' first hit, climbing to #17 in the U.K. and #1 in the States (it was re-released in the U.K. 1982, peaking at #4.) McCartney wrote most of "Love Me Do," with Lennon contributing a bit in the middle.
It was readily apparent to Martin during that first session at Abbey Road Studios that Pete Best wasn't going to cut it on drums, so he brought it up to Epstein, who spoke with the band (minus Best). Martin recalled in his book, Summer of Love, "On the 6 June Beatles' session (audition) I decided that Pete Best had to go [and said to Epstein] I don't care what you do with Pete Best; but he's not playing on any more recording sessions. I'm getting a session drummer in."

Singled Out: Unleash The Archers' Battle In The Shadow (Of The Mountain) |
This song was written quite early during the formation of the story for the album. It details the battle between the rebels, led by our protagonist, and the Dark Army, led by the General. The album is a concept piece, describing the tale of a man that salvages a sword from a long-abandoned Earth. However, the sword is incredibly powerful, and slowly corrupts his soul to evil.
This song marks the point where our mercenary completely loses himself to the sword and destroys everyone, including his own friends and lover. I tried my best to describe the scene with both concrete and abstract terminology... I wanted the listener to imagine being the rebels, entirely terrified, expecting only death, watching the Dark Army assemble in the valley below.
The part at the end is my favorite... The boys did an amazing job of writing instrumentals that encompassed the agonizing, yet triumphant emotion our mercenary experiences after slaying two armies almost single-handedly. I really enjoy singing that part, and I hope our fans are just as affected by it as I am :)
Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album
