Eric Clapton Apologizes For Leaving Stage Mid-Song

Guitar legend Eric Clapton has apologized to fans in Glasgow after he was forced to cut short the performance of one his classic songs on Saturday night due to technical issues.

Clapton was half-way through a performance of his classic song "Cocaine" when left the stage without an explanation. He then returned to close out the show with a performance of "High Time We Went", leaving some fans puzzled about what had gone wrong.

His official website posted the following explanation on Sunday: "Unfortunately last night in Glasgow we experienced a steadily worsening technical problem with the PA system that the band battled with throughout the show but by the last song of the set it became unbearable on stage and Eric was unable to complete that number. During the encore break we were able to reset and the band finished as planned with the last number.

"The usual touring set length runs at 1hr 35 mins so in fact the full set was performed apart from the entirety of 'cocaine' which had to be curtailed. Eric is nevertheless sorry for the break in the concert and the disappointment of his fans."

Mike Portnoy Fires Back Over 'Sell Out' Accusations

Former Dream Theater and current Winery Dogs drummer Mike Portnoy has responded to fan criticism calling him a "sell out" following the release of the new Tweet Secret app.

Portnoy had a strong reaction to the criticism on his Facebook page. He wrote fans, "The Tweet Secret app is something fun that I was asked to be a part of (along w several other musicians, athletes, etc). I don't control the fact that there is a monthly subscription fee, but really, it's only $2.99 a month. Is that really worth complaining about?? That's less than a cup of coffee at Starbucks!

"I figured you'd enjoy getting an inside, behind the scenes look into my day-to-day life. If this does NOT interest you, then fine, just ignore the posts that automatically go here when a new clip is posted and move on with your day.

"However, the nasty comments that seem to be popping up here calling me a 'sellout' or personally attacking me because of this app (which is not mine, mind you!) will not be tolerated and you will be banned from this page. There's no need to be mean and nasty around here."

Prince Previews Previously Unannounced Album

(Classic Rock) Prince invited a small group of invited guests to his Paisley Park studio to hear a previously unannounced album - although he conducted the gathering via a speakerphone.

He'd previously discussed Spectrum Electrum, recorded with his backing band 3rdEyeGirl - but the second project is a purely Prince work. Few details are available, although the Star Tribune reports titles include The Gold Standard (described as "classic Prince"), This Could Be Us (inspired by Purple Rain) and a remix of 3rdEyeGirl track Funk'n'Roll.

Prince took the opportunity to complain about the pace of current large-scale releases, saying: "Every number-one song, every top-ten song, every song in the top 40 is at least six months old. We should be able to make music and put it out now." more on this story

Robert Plant Streaming Song From New Album

(Radio.com) As Robert Plant prepares for the release of lullaby and The Ceaseless Roar, he's debuted the first song from the album, his first since 2010′s Band of Joy.

"Rainbow," the album's first single, is out today and currently streaming via the former Led Zeppelin frontman's YouTube page. Compared to some of Zeppelin's more rocking material, "Rainbow" is subdued in comparison, though it's still unmistakably a Plant record. Alongside guitar and driving percussion, Plant sings about "singing my song for you / and I will carry on" as a chorus of "ooh"s rise in the background.

"Rainbow" precedes the release of lullaby by a few months; the record, out on Nonesuch/Warner Bros., will be out Sept. 9 and features 11 new songs; all but two were written by Plant and his band.

"It's really a celebratory record, powerful, gritty, African, Trance meets Zep," Plant said in a statement. "The whole impetus of my life as a singer has to be driven by a good brotherhood. I am very lucky to work with The Sensational Space Shifters. They come from exciting areas of contemporary music I have been around awhile and I ask myself, do I have anything to say? Is there a song still inside me? In my heart? I see life and what's happening to me. Along the trail there are expectations, disappointments, happiness, questions and strong relationships and now I'm able to express my feelings through melody, power and trance; together in a kaleidescope of sound, colour, and friendship." Check out the song here.

Whitesnake Recruit 'New Super Guitarist'

(Gibson) Whitesnake frontman David Coverdale has revealed that the band has found its new guitarist to replace the departed Doug Aldrich... but he can't say who it is yet.

"We have had a new super guitarist in play for a while now, as I hinted some time ago, so, you can relax," Coverdale said overnight. "Unfortunately, because of contractual commitments on his side, we cannot reveal his name, rank and serial number just yet."

"Of course, you will be the first to know when we can draw back the Snakey curtains to show him in all his musical finery," he continued. "He is not a former member of Whitesnake. It is a new one with as many bells and whistles as we could could possibly need."

So who could it possibly be? Are there any hints in Coverdale's statement, beyond the confirmation that the new guitarist is not a returning former member (thus ruling out fan speculation that Bernie Marsden or Adrian Vandenberg were returning)? more on this story

Lars Ulrich Discusses Fans Reaction To New Metallica Song

(Classic Rock) Lars Ulrich says he knew Metallica's new song was bound to be a hit when he saw a fan wearing a home-made Lords Of Summer t-shirt. The drummer spotted a fan in the Snake Pit at a recent show wearing the shirt he had obviously made himself, something Ulrich describes as "endearing."

Ulrich tells Metal Hammer: "It's fun to play and it seems like the kids are enjoying it. There was actually somebody in the Snake Pit the other day with a homemade Lords Of Summer t-shirt on, which was very endearing. That was cool."

He adds that the song was written about the band's current tour, but admits it may not remain in its existing form by the time a new Metallica album comes around. more on this story

Genesis Cofounder Reacts To Being Left Out Of Reunion News

(Classic Rock) Genesis cofounder Anthony Phillips says he has mixed feelings about being left out of the band's recent "reunion" news. The BBC last week confirmed Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks and Steve Hackett would take part in a documentary to be aired later this year.

Phillips, who formed Genesis at Charterhouse school alongside Gabriel, Rutherford and Banks, has taken part in the show - but doesn't appear as a definitive band member. He tells the Telegraph: "I suppose it becomes a bit complicated to mention the different line-ups, so I think they just go for where the band was most static.

"Calling them the original lineup is just convenient parlance, isn't it? I've kind of got used to it. Occasionally one feels a little bit of a sort of footnote in history, almost airbrushed out. At other times I almost feel embarrassed about the interest shown to a time where, to be honest, some of the music was a bit rough.

"But if you're talking about the original line-up, it was the four guys at Charterhouse." more on this story

Lenny Kravitz Releases Lyric Video For New Single The Chamber

(Radio.com) With Strut, Lenny Kravitz's first new album in three years, out in September, the singer is prepping for its release with a new single, released this week. "The Chamber," Strut's first single, also has an accompanying lyric video. The song features a grooving bassline, with Kravitz lamenting a lover who "put one in the chamber and shot my heart of glass."

Strut is produced and arranged by Kravitz, who also plays guitar, bass, keyboards and drums and percussion on the album. For an extra ear, he invited Bob Clearmountain (David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen) to mix it.

In a statement issued by his publicist, Kravitz said of Strut, "This record brought me back to a place of what I love so much about music, back to the feelings I had when I was in high school. It's a real rock & roll record - it's raw, it's got soul and it came together really quickly."

Peter Frampton Releases New Album

(Gibson) Talkbox legend Peter Frampton is releasing his new album Hummingbird in a Box, today (June 24) via RED Distribution/Sony Music. The album was inspired by the Cincinnati Ballet. Frampton co-wrote the seven pieces together with Gordon Kennedy. The pair also worked together on the album Fingerprints in 2006.

The music for Hummingbird In A Box debuted live in April last year at Cincinnati's Aronoff Center for the Arts. Two of the segments were choreographed to existing Frampton songs, while the third was based around the seven new compositions. Frampton and his band was on hand to perform the music live.

"Writing for dance was a wonderfully freeing experience. There were no boundaries. We were able to push the composing envelope," Frampton said about the project, with Kennedy adding "Songwriters and musicians create music to move people. This was beautiful, graceful, and instantly gratifying!" more on this story

Iron Maiden Frontman Calls Out Autocue Users

(Classic Rock) Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson has taken a swipe at bands who use autocues on stage. He's particularly upset about having seen the lyrics to Judas Priest classic Breaking The Law on screen.

Dickinson tells the Guardian: "We still don't have an autocue - yay! I never realised people were using autocues. What the f*** is that all about? People pay good money and you can't even remember the sodding words.

"The daftest one I ever saw was Breaking The Law on the f***ing autocue - 'Breaking the law, breaking the law, breaking the law, breaking the law, breaking the law, breaking the law - guess what? - breaking the law.' It's ridiculous." more on this story

Extreme Planning First New Album In Six Years

(hennemusic) Extreme have revealed plans to record their first new album in six years. The band addressed the issue of new music during a pre-show press conference at Hellfest in Clisson, France on Saturday, where they were on a bill headlined by fellow Boston rockers Aerosmith.

"This is the first time we've ever gone on the road without new music [to promote], and I'm kind of embarrassed about that, to be honest," said guitarist Nuno Bettencourt.

"You know, it's doing that [we were performing] the [entire 1990] 'Pornograffitti' album [on some of the record tour dates], so it gives you a bit of an excuse to not have [a new] album [to tour behind]. But we're definitely working on stuff, and by the end of the year, we should have a new album in. It won't be a little one [EP]; it'll be a regular size." more on this story

Jane's Addiction To Receive Honor At Sunset Strip Music Festival

(hennemusic) Jane's Addiction will be honored with the Elmer Valentine Award at the 2014 Sunset Strip Music Festival, set for September 20 and 21 in West Hollywood, California.

The honor, which celebrates the music and icons that have made an impact on the legacy of The Strip, sees the band join a distinguished list of former honorees, including Ozzy Osbourne (2009), Slash (2010), Motley Crue (2011), The Doors (2012) and Joan Jett (2013).

"It all started for me back when my big brother used to tell me about The Strip, and about the amazing scene where artists like Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison blew people's minds by pioneering a new sound and influencing culture in a more exciting way than ever before. Complete with massive crowds from all over the world streaming through the streets and flocking to The Strip just trying to be part of it all," says frontman Perry Farrell.

"So when it came time for Jane's to record our first album we told Warner Brothers that before we could even release a studio record we had to make a live record on The Strip, and we even recorded it at The Roxy, because we knew that it had to embody that inspiration that came from the heart of that scene. We are very proud to come from this heritage and are truly honored by the Valentine Award." more on this story
