The Mercury Prize Goes XX

(Gibson) The xx have won The Mercury Prize for their debut album, xx. The band from London beat out more established acts such as Dizzee Rascal and Corinne Bailey Rae as well as more commercially successful bands such as Mumford and Sons and Biffy Clyro. They also topped British rock legend Paul Weller, who was rumored to be the favorite as recent as yesterday.

According to the Guardian, the band accepted the award by saying, "We've had the most incredible year. Every day we've woken up to something incredible we weren't expecting."

The Mercury Prize is awarded every year for an album made by a music act from the United Kingdom or Ireland. Previous winners include Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys and Portishead. -
