Cliff Burton Would Approve of Metallica Teaming Up With Lou Reed

Rock biographer Mick Wall argues in his debut column at RockAAA that the late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton would approve of his band teaming up with Lou Reed. Wall writes:

Cliff Burton, who has now been dead longer than he lived, would not be turning in his grave at the thought of Metallica working with Lou Reed. Actually, it was Cliff who first introduced the rest of them to the music of Reed via his love of the Velvet Underground. This was in the days when Cliff was also introducing them to albums by Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, The Police and Stanley Clarke.

The Velvets were, and remain, one of the most out-there, truly subversive rock groups that ever existed. Check out their 17-minute death-trip Sister Ray and tell me they didn't take rock music beyond its boundaries. This at a time, it should be born in mind, when James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich were still in short-trousers. Read's Mick's full column here
