Miss America Uses Pharrell Hit To Win (Recap)
. The former Miss New York and 23-year-old Hofstra graduate took home the title after covering the song that earned Pharrell an Academy Award nomination, "Happy." Kazantsev's rendition didn't involve any dancing or big hats, but she did manage to pull out a technique from another recent hit song, "Cups (When I'm Gone)" from Pitch Perfect, pulling off the cup-stacking rhythm in addition to singing "Happy." Kazantsev has clearly paid attention to pop culture over the past couple of years. All in all, it was a pretty smart move to blend together two things that America loves - and apparently the judges agreed, given her victory. More including video - here.
