Any movie critic can tell you what a newly released DVD is about & spoil the ending for you. I plan to ruin your entire DVD watching experience by highlighting it's flaws, it's missteps, it's examples of poor editing, casting, and point out the ridiculous holes in the plot. If you're cynical, you'll appreciate this valuable service I'm providing. If you're easily impressed, then don't say I didn't warn you.  - Mean Jean

The Incredibles

This movie is excellent that I wish I had bought it brand new when Wal Mart was selling them at the discounted 'first week on sale' price. Now I have to wait a couple more months & buy it used at a video store, but you don't have to be as cheap as me, you can run out today & buy it new!

What would happen if superheroes were sued out of existence by modern day denizens of America? Not only would that be an accurate picture of life in our culture, but it would be a pretty novel look at the almost tired subject of superhero movies that's been getting pretty done to death lately.

With this flick, Pixar recognizes that the kids who were wee ones at the release of Toy Story now are older, less impressed, more able to sit through plot, character development, and subtle nuances. This is a movie that has grown up along with its target audience: older kids will willingly sit through this flick and lil ones will like as well. Movies that appeal to a wide range of ages are rare, this is one of those gems, according to preliminary data compiled in my little microcosmic research lab.

The flick doesn't take the easy way out of tricky situations, cartoon style. There's no sudden spike in crime once every single superhero on the planet is forced into retirement, leading the masses to clamor for superheroes being recalled into service. Attempts to behave superheroically need to be clandestine, or the consequences will be severe.

Since these are all fake characters, I won't write of the demons the characters have to ride with in their tortured inner rollercoaster thrill ride® struggle, going from celebrated for being heroic to being middle manager types at Acme Accounting. Suffice it to say the action isn't forced along from one implausible scenario to another. In this, the cartoonish figures act more human than any character in a Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise movie, for instance.

The movie has surprising plot twists, the villain is delightfully bad, his origins are clever & plausible, why can't people make movies for adults as high quality & well thought out as this? Making movies like this for kids sets a dangerous precedent. Once Pixar's target audience is too old for Pixar, they are going to be disgusted to find that the movies made for adults make cartoons look intelligent.
