Gay For Johnny Depp - What Doesn't Kill You, Eventually Kills You

by Kevin Wierzbicki

.
Pretty good idea, naming your band Gay For Johnny Depp. Not only does the moniker stand out from the legion of groups called blah-blah-this and blah-blah-that but there are "key words" in the name that'll give online searchers looking for something else an accidental entrιe to music they just might enjoy. Potential listeners shouldn't expect, however, GFJD to be a novelty act just because their name is a little unusual and some of their songs have silly titles. These guys are punk rockers but not of the lets-just-flail-away-and-see-if-we-can-get-away-with-it sort; there's a ton of talent here. Despite the fact that the very hardcore "Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny and Artistic Integrity" (things that don't exist, get it?) kicks off the album the smashing, bashing and screamed vocals are done in such a purposeful way as to indicate these guys clearly do have artistic integrity. Not all here is hardcore but it is all ferocious; "Nine Inch Males (Born to Hate)" rages like Rage in the Machine and sneers like Johnny Rotten while "Pink Flag," through a thrumming bass line, adds an element of psychobilly to the guitar-n-drums cyclone that permeates just about every song. The band kicks a little sand in your face during "Rod Don't Surf" and lest you think GFJD doesn't realize from whence they came, here also is a decent cover of the Slade chestnut, "Cum On Feel the Noize." What Doesn't Kill You… is packed with good stuff---this is one of those recordings that make you itch to see the band live and to hope that when you compare notes with your hip friends that you knew about GFJD before they do. Let's just hope that the very powerful Mr. Depp doesn't get a wild hair and call his attorney and quash all the fun.
