Iggy and the Stooges - Raw Power Live: In the Hands of the Fans

by Kevin Wierzbicki

.
Who knew in the early 1970s that the Stooges would end up being one of the most-respected and influential punk bands of all time? Some did, and they were the ones who found reward in really listening to the band, and in the case of the third album, hearing something beyond the wild buzz and bravado of Raw Power's most-played tracks, "Search and Destroy" and the title cut. This live performance of Raw Power in its entirety, recorded at the 2010 All Tomorrow's Parties festival, gives everyone else a chance to catch up nearly four decades later. Iggy starts the show with the two above-mentioned songs, indicating right off the bat that the song sequence is going to be different from the original recording. Never mind though; after the bombastic start comes the real meat of the album with Iggy prowling the mean streets of "Gimme Danger," holding the band to a simmer until a cyclone of feral guitar from James Williamson sends the whole band into a psychotic frenzy. Iggy jokes that "This one has a pretty good beat…" before the band launches into the surf-y garage-rocking "Shake Appeal" and he yells at drummer Scott Asheton to "Get ready to play some blues" when it's time for "I Need Somebody." Iggy, Asheton and Williamson are joined by Steve Mackay and Mike Watt in this version of the Stooges and they perform here with more energy than they possibly could have in their youth, maybe because in their maturity none are drug-addled. The homage ends with "Death Trip" and Iggy shouting "That was Raw Power!" and then an encore of non-Raw Power cut "I Got a Right." For the time being this title is available only on 180-gram vinyl or as a digital download.
