Southern Rock Shootout: 38 Special vs. Molly Hatchet

by Kevin Wierzbicki

.
38 Special
Live from Texas

38 Special Records

If you've forgotten just how good 38 Special sounded as they tore up radio with hit after hit back in the '80s here's your chance to get reacquainted with one of the most popular southern rock bands of all time. And don't give one single thought to the notion that these guys are ready for the old folks home; lead singers Donnie Van Zandt and Don Barnes are in strong voice and the band is polished to a bright luster, charging here through hits like "Rockin' Into the Night," "Back Where You Belong," "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys" "If I'd Been the One" and "Fantasy Girl" while throwing album cuts like "The Squeeze" and "Trooper With an Attitude" in between the blockbusters. There's also a medley that starts off as "Back to Paradise" that works its way through "Teacher, Teacher" and four other tunes before wrapping up as "Second Chance." The set ends strongly with big hit "Caught Up in You," fan favorite "Chain Lightnin'" and the group's ultimate arena rocker, "Hold On Loosely." Having played all their biggies encores are left to cover songs and the guys send the crowd home to the strains of Chuck Berry's "Back in the U.S.A." and the Creedence Clearwater Revival chestnut "Travelin' Band."

Molly Hatchet
Greatest Hits II

SPV

If you are only familiar with Molly Hatchet from their radio hits back in the day you will not know most or any of the songs collected on the first disc of this 2-CD set. Don't confuse that with meaning that you shouldn't know them; latest singer Phil McCormack has, with all respect to the late Danny Joe Brown, the consummate Molly Hatchet voice and fans who only know the real old tracks will find lots of likable similarities in songs like "Son of the South" and lengthy jams like the eerie "Devil's Canyon" and "The Journey." But here's the real enticement to get fans from the old days back in the fold via Greatest Hits II; the second disc finds Hatchet performing live versions of their hits including "Gator Country," "Whiskey Man," "Beatin' the Odds," "Dreams I'll Never See" and of course "Flirtin' With Disaster." Also included is a studio version of "Sacred Ground" that is previously unreleased.
