Grey Heaven Fall - Black Wisdom

by Kevin Wierzbicki

Grey Heaven Fall is a three-piece black metal/death metal band from Russia and here vocalist Arsagor sings (in Russian) in a death growl that would scare the devil back to hell, or at least panic the grizzly bears wandering around Siberia. On opening track "The Lord is Blissful in Grief" Arsagor issues his merciless snarl over a soundtrack that sounds maybe like what The Police would have sounded like should they have gone metal, powered along by frenetic and sometimes thrashing beats from drummer Pavel. Arsagor also plays guitar and while mostly here he's riffing like crazy, bits of melody finds its way into instrumental portions of songs like "Spirit of Oppression," making the band fit into, for that song at least, the prog metal category. "Sanctuary of Cut Tongues," appropriately enough for a song whose title references cut (out) tongues, is an instrumental, an understated and foreboding cloud of doom, like something that envelopes some unfortunate soul chained up in a dungeon, slowly rotting away. The six-song effort wraps up with "That Nail in a Heart," another slightly proggy yet thrashy cut. Don't let the fact that Black Wisdom has been released by a Russian label make you think it's hard to find; if you want to give it a try, just take a look and you'll find it easily, waiting patiently for its chance to haunt you.
