Okay, first off, I must admit that I knew
nothing about Cradle of Filth going into this review. I had heard of them,
and there was a reason I didn't know anything about them...I chose not
to!...However, the antiMUSIC.com editor slapped their new CD "Midian" on
my desk a while ago, and I had no choice to put down my prejudices and
give this CD a fair shot. I decided to wait until I was having a bad week
(that didn't take long) so I could get in as much of a dark, goth metal
mood as I could. At least give the disc a fair shake. And you know what?
This CD rocks...
Like I said, Cradle Of Filth: Midian was
a CD I was ready to trash before I put it in. If you're a fan reading this,
I won't pretend to compare it to other COF releases, because like I said,
I knew nothing about them. I found a couple of people into this stuff,
and one liked it more than any of their previous releases, one liked it
less, and one thought it was on par...So whatever, I'm not the one to criticize
their musical progress.
What I will say in this review is this:
I can't stand speed/goth metal, but Cradle Of Filth is so good at it, that
I don't care! These guys actually know their instruments, and the production
is awesome. There's even some catchy melodies thrown in once in a while,
that surprised me for speed metal. The vocalist has this screech that is
impossible to understand, and since I only have a promo copy with no lyrics,
I don't know what the songs are about. But I imagine it's not about petting
kittens. The label is pushing them as the successors to Black Sabbath,
and true, they both dabble with the darker aspects of life. COF is definitely
not your mom and dad's Sabbath, though!
Here's all the background you'll need to
determine if you are a potential Cradle Of Filth listener...if this story
disgusts you, then stay away. KNAC.com reported that just last week in
Scotland, a Tower Records that carried a Cradle Of Filth t-shirt was raided
and forced not to sell it. The shirt depicts a picture of a topless, masturbating
nun, with the phrase "Jesus Is A Cunt" written across the chest...
And honestly, even though the band is very
good musically, and Midian is a strong album, I probably will stay
away from the band's future releases. That's strictly just my personal
taste though. As an album, this is very good for it's genre. I liked it
(especially Lord Abortion), and that's saying a lot, since I was almost
trying NOT to!

It just isn't fair! I look very similar to Dani, sound almost exactly like Dani, and it freaks people out. Yet, there is someone who looks like Ozzy, but I guess that does'nt really matter. Dani is SOOO hot, and so I touch myself, but when I look at myself (even looking a lot like him) I just can never manage to get myself going.

i think cof is the best band in the world they kick asz, Dani's lyrics are amazing and he's voice brings a tear to my eye because he is sooooo HOT!and i love all the guitar in it its sooooooo...........can't think of a word..........touching, amazing, wonderful?

You're an idiot. Who ends up going to therapists are depressed, angsty nu-metal fans. I don't see how writing lyrics worthy of Shakespeare would make someone need therapy...
Many people are calling CoF Black or Death Metal (Did I hear punk as well?!). They are neither. Black is stuff like Black Witchery, Anaal Nathrakh, and Darkthrone. CoF are a combination of Symphonic/Melodic Black Metal and Goth Metal. Dani has a few Death growls every now and then, but that doesn't make them Death Metal.
Also, many people are saying that they have all of their albums. Well I hope you guys know about their first 2 CDs, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh and Vempire, which along with Dusk and Her Embrace make up the best CoF albums.
And no offense but lots of you sound like you've never heard anything outside of CoF, and also sound like mallgoths. This is one reason why they're hated by true Black Metal fans.
And I'm a straight guy, but I find Dani very sexy. :/

Yes, Cradle of filth is by far the best f*cking death metal band there is, the compositions, the melodies, the use of the instruemtns, how guitar, keyboard, drums and bass, all stick together creating one overall huge powerfull sound and Dani perfectly leads it all. i thnk cradle of filth is the best goth band i ever heard they kick so much behind. they are what most hardcore goth bands that everyone wishes to be like. cradle of filth will kick any oher goth bands out of there way. there is no match against cradle of fllth. all cradle of filth is hardcore no wuzzy band like other poser bandz. cradle of filth kicks is the best goth band and no one or nothing kan stop them there mad man's on kaoz and nothing is gonna stop or change that.

Cradle of filth is a revolution in black metal music. Most black or death metal sounds the same, such as cannibal corpse and morbid angel. Anyone can growl, but no one can belt out a long winded, blood curdling scream like dani. Gian is by far my favorite guitarist. Mixing your typical dark metal drums and guitars with the classical pianos, harpsichords, organs, string ensambles, etc., is the best music twist anyone could have thought of. It gives it the true gothic feel, not the "wear black, I'm scary" type, just pure 1600s dark side of society sound. That is why I hail the Libertine's gift.

Maybe its a little bit too late for me to make a judgement on this CD. But I've been a fan of CoF since I was about thirteen, and the first CD I bought was Midian. And I must say, they are hands-down the greatest black metalists to date. The song Tortured Soul Asylum got me hooked, and now I have every one of their CDs..even the over seas live albums. I just have to say, don't change a thing CoF, you guys rock.

I started with COF a long time ago, you can say since:(The principle of evil made flesh) album which was their 1st. And now after working in Virgin Records among a wide variety of genres & styles, it seems that Black Metal has the least popularity among listeners, but in my point of view the less popular the more real & far from comercial & consumed. Cradle of Filth is the best Black Metal band regarding the ideology they're based on, for in each and every album they prooved creativity, so I can't say that Midian is their best or worst, but it's sure to be their newest.

Cradle of Filth is an amazing band, thats a given. But I honestly think Dani Filth is an amazing vocalist, his screetching voice is almost hypnotic at some points, and he gives it his all through his music. Great band, great CD!

Well i must say that I AM a huge metal fans and I didn,t know COF before till i started listening up their music and i must say that they have a great talent of producing music and Midian is the best album of 2000 for sure and they totally rock the whole world.

Midian. After that I decided to check out the rest of their albums and
I think Midian is the best progressed and best album that they have made.
They connected with me a whole lot with their music for i'm a musician
myself and lead singer in a band in North Carolina called Shatterstar.
You can check out more about us on shatterstar.net. I'm not into the vampiric
or satanic religion or really into their lyrics but their music is very
awesome! Their lyrics are very deep and complexed and it would take a whole
lot to understand COF and their lyrics from the life of Dani and the band
and from the Vampiric religion they are in. It all deals with the past,
present, and future. It's one of my favorite types of music with the beautiful
but yet brutal and powerfull beats and melodies that they impale into their
music. It gives me this huge rush of adrenaline and energy rush everytime
I hear Midian and makes me feel unstopable and invincible. My favorite
songs are the first 5 songs on Midian. On how the intro (At The Gates of
Midian) goes into Cthulu Dawn perfectly. It's so melodic and it up rushes
you with adrenaline and then explodes right into the very depths of your
soul and pumps you up for a journey to come. Out of all of their cds that
they have, I would rate this one a perfect 10 and make this one the best
that they have out. But that is my view and my opinion on COF and Midian.
Everybody has their own view and opinions on things. So I think you can
either take my word for it or be yourself and check it out for youself.

RULES, DEATH TO ALL POP AND P*SSY BOY BANDS.

Dirty : I've been listening to COF since "Cruelty
and the Beast". They are hands down the best band I've ever heard. The
way the music is put together is stunning and beatiful with lyrics complementing
the music perfectly in every way. Midian only capitalizes on previous releases.
This CD has quickly become my favorite CoF album. When I heard "Her Ghost
in the Fog" I knew the rest of the album would be amazing. I believe Midian
to be CoF's best album and it is well worth the money.

into black metal so i didn't try out COF until i accidentaly clicked on
a link that took me to a video of their's. It was Her Ghost In the Fog,

yomama: My friend is waaay into Punk, Heavy Metal,
Goth, etc. and he downloads songs all the time. He brought over one CD
he had burned and when he played 'At The Gates of Midian,' I was hooked.
Their music is by far the best I have heard. I never was into Manson, Cannibal
Corpse or any other 'Society Named Evil' groups but I really like Cradle
of Filth.

I saw some pics from Alt Press and pre judged them as another Manson want
to be band with a 6 feet under or canibal corpse ripoff sound. Well i felt
kinda bored and went on napster and got Lord Abortion. And i must say i
was amazed. The song is great. I went and bout this cd and a few previous
releases. I think this is a good reason why napster should keep gooing,
but that is a differnt discussion. My definition of COF is goth/speedmetal/punk
band. Punk it it's attitude. They are not your momma's black sabbath, but
they are not you momma's goth band either. They are a disturbing punk do-whatever-the-f**k
they feel like band, and it comes out in their stuff. I mean even compared
to other death metal bands they are far more melodic and punkish. Punk
beats galor in previous albums. I mean take a dethmteal band like Nile
which has no melody whatsoever.... Give COF a try.

This CD rocks, man, I wasn't into death
metal till my friend brought this cd "Midian", now i have all of their
cd's, but median is their best one, i think. Cruelty and the Beast is also
one of my favorites. this band really rocks, now i'm into death metal.
This is some heavy stuff, what i like about this cd is that it is so gothic,
and it sounds great.

other black metal bands. They use a classical style with the mystery and
curisoty of death. They deliver a musical performance that pulls you in,
pumps you full of musical genius then spits you back out, leaving you with
the feeling of what the hell was that.

True_Metal: I like the description of this band that
was given here "speed/goth" metal... since that's how I'd describe them.
I'm not the biggest CoF fan, but this is an honest review. They're one
of the more mainstream metal bands today... but I doubt they're the new
generation's Black Sabbath. Speaking from a metal point of view, that title
goes to a band called sHeavy. I don't own this album, I'll probably borrow
it from a friend or something. I spend my hard earned money buying other
new metal like the new The Haunted album or the new Rhapsody album There's
no "market" for metal these days... the rock scene is watered down with
the simple punk-chord oriented korn-rock... which I don't care for one
bit, and I find offensive when people refer to it as "metal"
