Day in Pop Report for 11/21/2014
In the very, very NSFW clip, helmed by horror film director Eli Roth, Lana Del Rey is among those who appear, along with Manson and many others. The singer is pictured on a bed in nothing but a Texas Chainsaw Massacre T-shirt and underwear, attacked and then held down by a shirtless man. Manson's in the video, too, appearing at an ill-fated dinner party where two women break nearly everything in sight, and then again waving a purple flare at the screen behind Aviator sunglasses. Roth was interviewed by Larry King a year ago and spoke briefly about Sturmgruppe, the film from which the scenes were taken. "The footage is so sick, it's been locked in a vault for a year," Roth told King in October 2013, meaning it remained there for yet another year before finally seeing a release. It's unclear what the footage was for and if there's any more to it-and if there is, whether it'll see the light of day. Watch the video, which may contain content unsuitable for some viewers, here.
On the song, he references Azalea by name-and even makes a rape reference. "So swallow my pride, you're lucky just to follow my ride / If I let you run alongside the Humvee," he raps on the track. "Unless you're Nicki, grab you by the wrist, let's ski / So what's it gon' be / Put that s**t away, Iggy / You don't wanna blow that rape whistle on me." "im bored of the old men threatening young women as entertainment trend and much more interested in the young women getting $ trend. zzzz," she tweeted in the first of a string of messages directed at Eminem and Shady Records. She added that it's "awkward" because her 14-year-old brother is an Eminem fan, and now "the artist he admired says he wants to rape me. nice!" Read more here.
Her trial date is set for Feb. 15, according to Arkansas' 40/29 News. Evers was transferred to Arkansas recently from New Mexico, where she had been arrested at an Albuquerque motel. Evers, who clearly looks nothing like Krauss, was nonetheless able to impersonate the singer on a dating website. She even convinced recently widowed 75-year-old Don Fulton that she was Krauss in person by singing some of her songs. She then conned Fulton out of his life savings and the deed to his house, even filing a will for him that named her as the heir. "I lost my wife back last June the 18th, and I was getting lonely and I was looking for some friendship," Fulton said, in a quote posted by New Mexico's KRQE in September. Gordy says, "Jimmy Ruffin was a phenomenal singer. He was truly underrated because we were also fortunate to have his brother, David, as the lead singer of the Temptations, who got so much acclaim. "Jimmy, as a solo artist, had 'What Becomes of the Broken Hearted,' one of the greatest songs put out by Motown and also one of my personal favorites. He was a wonderful human being, quiet and unassuming, who touched many lives with his music, not just here in the states, but overseas, as well. "Jimmy Ruffin will always be a part of the Motown legacy, and I extend my sincere condolences to his family, friends and fans."
The Taylor Swift Experience will debut at the museum on December 13 and feature a wide array of Swift memorabilia and interactive installations. This is a fitting date, as it is the country/pop icon's 25th birthday. The display will run until May 10, 2015. On the GRAMMY Museum website, Executive Director of the museum Bob Santelli says "Global superstar Taylor Swift is one of popular music's biggest talents whose music is beloved by millions of fans worldwide. Telling the story of Taylor's remarkable rise to superstardom is something the museum is extremely excited about." See a list of some of the items that will be featured here.
The variety show has confirmed that Charli XCX and One Direction will make the pilgrimage to 30 Rock in December, flanked by hosts James Franco, Martin Freeman and Amy Adams, respectively. It'll be Charli XCX's first stop on the show; she could have appeared with Iggy Azalea earlier in the year on the song "Fancy" but did not perform. Her episode with Freeman will be Dec. 13. The tour launches in Biloxi, MS tonight (November 21st) at the Golden Nugget and will conclude on December 21st at the Weidner Center for Performing Arts in Green Bay, WI. Frontman Duane Allen had this to say, "It's that time of year againtime for the jingle bells to be ringing around the world, and on the stage of The Oak Ridge Boys' Christmas show. There'll be songs you already know, the traditional songs, Oak Ridge Boys' Christmas hits, and some new songs. And I've heard that Santa Claus may be arriving on a Peterbilt Sleigh. We begin our show with some major Oak Ridge Boys hits, then we take a break and when the snow starts falling, it's a flow-blown Christmas show.fireplace, rocking chairs (thank you, Cracker Barrel) and all of the exciting, fun, and spiritual songs that reflect the true meaning of Christmas."
Guitarist Daniel Kessler, who has handled much of the band's social media presence during this time, tweeted from the official band account at 7 a.m. ET this morning that the band was finally making a move, followed by a simple photo of the tour bus on a snow-covered road. It appears the band at least made some progress into downtown Buffalo, though their most recent tweets suggest that another holdup is afoot due to a road block, tweeting that they were in a "holding pattern." The track, which comes from the R&B legend's upcoming thirteenth studio album The London Sessions, is a breezy house song with a wobbly beat where Blige lays down diva vocals. It wouldn't have been out of place on the duo's 2013 debut album Settle, and it fits in nicely with what we've heard from Blige's album so far, "Right Now," "Nobody But You," "When You're Gone," "Whole Damn Year," and the Sam Smith-penned "Therapy." The track increasingly builds into something destined for the dancefloor throughout. Blige finishes it off belting out "Giving all or giving nothing/ Giving love or give it up," before Disclosure end with a soft fade out. It's all the more reason to be counting down the days until The London Sessions drops on Dec. 2. The album also features a collaboration with Emeli Sand. Listen to the new track here.
One of Nichols' most iconic motion pictures, The Graduate, was well known for its soundtrack, which featured Simon & Garfunkel ("Mrs. Robinson" will forever be associated with the flick, and it was even parodied in Wayne's World 2). Fittingly, Art Garfunkel has paid tribute to the departed Nichols. "Aahhhh how I loved Mike," Garfunkel said to Billboard. "Truly. Deeply. He was the most sparkling man among us. Life will be different for us now. Earth will be a little duller. Mike Nichols is not alive. The self is a creation. Mike created an extraordinary star - so bright, so extremely clever - him-self. When you were with him, he brought you up to your best smart self, and kept it light with humor." Read more here.
"Directed by award-winning filmmaker Nick Clark and set in the eclectic, non-profit Los Angeles-based MorYork Gallery, the clip shows the colorful Sage - who is also a visual artist herself - seamlessly integrated within the extraordinary industrial jungle of veteran sculptor Clare Graham. "Made entirely of recycled materials such as soda-cans and puzzle pieces, Graham's unusual artwork provides the perfect context for Sage's alt-pop song about the karma we create within relationships. Renowned theremin master Armen Ra (Antony & The Johnsons, Marc Almond) also makes a guest appearance in the video. Watch the video here.
As the title suggests, "Psychopath Killer" isn't all happiness and rainbows-but given Em's track record both career-wise and in the past month, there's little surprise. "Now Catholics are panicking/ 'Cause I snapped back to my old antics and shenanigans," he raps. "D***it the pope's mad again/ Probably shouldn't have ran up in the Vatican." On Wednesday night (Nov. 19) before his show in Dallas, Cole singled out a fan on Twitter to hear the new album-in her home. Cole played 2014 Forest Hills Drive for the lucky fan, visiting her home to meet her family, play video games and hang out before the show. The lucky fan did tweet her live review-including a preview of her favorite track. "The album is AMAZING..It's so personal!LOVED the production.some of the joints had me in tears!! My fav is LEGENDARY #2014ForestHillsDrive" Read more here.
The pair of rappers appeared on The Eric Andre Show on Adult Swim, deciding to conduct a battle rap while running two treadmills side by side, since battle rapping on the streets or on a stage just isn't enough anymore. To be fair, the battle is mostly made up of both portly rappers' heavy breathing, though they manage to get out a few bars. Bronson dons a large hooded sweatshirt the whole time, which probably isn't helping matters. According to a tweet from Killer Mike's Twitter, the rapper was "hella high" while filming the segment, too. Watch it here.
The track is right in Mars' vintage soul wheelhouse with its piano-laden groove. Mars opens up the track explaining that the song's title is what the object of his desire tastes like. There's nothing subtle about his lyrics: ""Sugar, cocoa, and honey / That's what you taste like to me / Now all I need is your sex to wash it down." Gipp is a little less overt, dropping a smoky-voiced verse intended to woo: "If you didn't have lunch / Imma send it / your car broke down/ I'll send a driver." The song appears on Gipp's upcoming mixtape, Mr. Get Down, which will be followed up by his album. 15 tracks deep, the mixtape also features guest spots from 2 Chainz and Snoop Dogg. It drops Thanksgiving Day. Listen here.
The GRAMMY-nominated musician is auctioning off her previously unreleased cover of The Dixie Cups' "Iko Iko" starting at $1 on Kickstarter. Also available will be autographed photographs from Sia that start at $150, as well as video greetings for $500. And by far the best prize of them all is a personalized singing experience where Sia will sing a song to you in person while a friend records it for $10,000. Read more here.
"I can't take the ache from heartbreak," he belts. With neon lights projecting on O'Donoghue and his band, a hologram of women are shown frozen in time. As he practices his apology on the woman he's done wrong she slowly comes to life. Does she forgive him? You'll have to watch to find out. "No Good In Goodbye" is the latest single off the Script's fourth studio album, No Sound Without Silence, which was released this year. Watch the video here.
The Flaming Lips combine with Ono for a new cover of the song, released Thursday (Nov. 20). It's very much a reimagining of the track in the Lips' vein, the band's usual psychedelic undertones leading over sounds of sleigh bells. Frontman Wayne Coyne takes the lead on the verses, while Ono helms the chorus she sang on the original over 40 years ago. It may not be a formidable replacement for the Lennon/Ono standard that's permeated Christmas-playing radio stations across the country, but when it comes to injecting a little alt rock into your holidays, you could do much worse. It's all for a new Amazon playlist, "All is Bright," just in time for the holiday season. In all, 43 songs were collected for the playlist, which is available for free for Amazon Prime members. Lucinda Williams, Liz Phair and Brandi Carlile are among the many contributors. Read more and listen here.
