Day in Pop Report for 09/11/2014
According to Billboard and confirmed by clips that have surfaced online, from the moment Bieber hit the stage the crowd started booing, but that didn't stop Bieber from stripping off his blazer, black top and pants. Eventually he was just standing on stage at the Barclays Center in a pair of boxers. Though, as he made clear, he is very comfortable in his Calvins. Unfortunately, there were not nearly enough Beliebers in attendance to overtake those who weren't really interested in seeing the Canadian pop star in his skivvies. Though, perhaps, the crowd was just concerned they were going to see Justin Bieber's private partsagain. Not that Bieber seemed to mind the tepid response, tweeting a Vine of his Magic Mike moment with the message, "Grandma always said kill 'em with kindnessand then strip on live national tv." Spears has made no qualms about letting fans know she is single after her boyfriend, David Lucado cheated on her. Now Fallon says, Brit-Brit "sings good jingles, she loves her Pringles and she's ready to mingle." On Tuesday night's (Sept. 9), Tonight Show Fallon brought Ms. Spears out to a standing ovation and let the pop star know that he had taken a pretty big step in her quest to find the perfect mate. Namely, signing her up for Tinder. With Britney looking rather confused, Fallon admitted he was totally serious and even set up the profile using the tagline, "This better work, b-h." "I want to stress that Britney had nothing to do with this," he said. "This was our idea." And how does Britney feel? "I'm thrilled," she said, ever so sarcastically. So, start swiping eligible bachelors. Fallon did eventually give his pros and cons of dating Britney, included pro: you can cuddle and watch her favorite show. Con? That show is The Late Show with David Letterman. Watch the rest of Fallon's list here.
The song that is creeping around the internet at the moment is the previously announced collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, titled "Autumn Leaves." The song features Brown's voice swirling behind masks of delay, echoes and a vocoder, giving the song a particularly modern feel. Lamar shows-up mid-way through to drop a show-stealing verse, typical of his tendency to steal just about every song he is featured on, including the recently released collaborations with Flying Lotus ("Never Catch Me"), Jeezy ("Holy Ghost") and Jasmine V ("That's Me Right There"). Jaggermeryx naida, which translates to "Jagger's water nymph," was a mix between a hippo and a long-legged pig, according to Phys.org. As for its facial similarity? "The animal probably had a highly innervated muzzle with mobile and tactile lips, thus the Jagger reference," said Duke University paleontologist and study co-author Gregg Gunnell. "It may have used its sensitive snout to forage along river banks, scooping up plants with its lower teeth and large lips," co-author Ellen Miller added. The extinct animal's fossils were reportedly found scattered around catfish, turtles, waterbirds and crocodile poop at a remote site in the Egyptian desert. More details here.
From there, the pop star will head to the East Coast and then back track to the West, where she'll finish in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on April 16. One of the biggest dates of the tour is a set on March 20, when she'll take over Madison Square Garden in New York. Check out a full list of her tour dates here.
Produced by Jacknife Lee and Don Was, it's the first studio release of original material from Diamond in six years, 2008's Home After Dark, and his first record since 2010's Dreams, which was made up of covers. The 12-track album includes the title track (and a later reprise), plus songs like "First Time," "Something Blue" and more. The 11th track, "The Art of Love," has a newly premiered lyric video as well. "It takes tremendous vision, focus and determination - combined with a mega-dose of God-given talent, charisma and soul - to create music that becomes indelibly ingrained in the fabric of our culture," co-producer Was said in a statement about the album. "I'm basically starting a life with my wife now," the Backstreet Boy told Radio.com. "It shows how difficult it is to be in a relationship with someone like myself. The lifestyle that we actually live, being in a boy band at 34-years-old, all the things she puts up with because she's just a normal girl and it's hard. It leads to a happy fairy-tale ending but it's not typical." While Carter describes the show as a unique love story, he said it does have it's fair share of drama in it. In fact, in an interview last year with Radio.com, he revealed that life isn't easy for the wives and girlfriends of a boy band member. "My fianc actually gets the brunt of it," he told us last year. "There are girls out there that send her death threats and tell her they want to kill her and write her name on Twitter and draw pictures of her. We deal with that on a daily basis." So how does Carter and his wife overcome these things? Nick and Knight bandmate Jordan Knight, who will appear on an episode of the show, has given him some advice. Read what he had to say about that and more here.
The location for the announcement makes sense, as the album was recorded primarily in Hollywood in 1976, Wonder's 18th album at the time, and considered by many to be both his best and his most important. That "plus" included in the number of tour dates takes on increased importance in the city of the press conference, as Los Angeles wasn't one of the 10 cities included on the initial itinerary. The tour, produced and promoted by Live Nation, will kick off Nov. 6 in New York City at Madison Square Garden and will continue through Dec. 5 when it wraps in Oakland, Calif. In between, Wonder has lined-up stops in Washington, D.C., Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Auburn Hills, Atlanta, Toronto, Las Vegas and Seattle. Check out the current slate of dates here.
The band announced the news on their Instagram today, where they posted a photo of lead singer and guitarist Wesley Schultz along with the caption, "Well folks, we are back in the studio, chippin away at some new ideas. It's been one hell of a ride so far and we are excited to be writing again. Thanks and stay tuned" On top of working on their album and having written a song for The Walking Dead, the Lumineers also contributed to the Lorde-curated soundtrack for the upcoming film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 - out Nov. 21. In "Studio (Remix)," Nas takes a moment to casually drop that his new album is imminent. "Finished up my new album / single about to be droppin' / Last album on Def Jam and I got so many options," Nas raps before joining in on the song's hook. Just yesterday, ScHoolboy Q revealed that he's already at work on a new album, possibly due out at the beginning of next year. BJ the Chicago Kid also hops on the remix right after Nas leaves with the announcement that's he's single and looking - "I'm interviewing, holla." BJ picks up where Nas leaves off on the chorus, making the remix a little slinkier. Take a listen here.
Radio.com caught up with the GRAMMY-winning singer/songwriter to talk about The Way, Stevie Wonder and Metallica. "You gotta hear it," Gray says of her new album. "It's really raw, it's dirty, it's grimy but it's some of the best songs that I've ever done." Gray says the album reflects where she is now; speaking to grown-ups instead of kids who have some life experience under their belts. And uniqueness, long a characteristic Gray had in spades, was at the forefront of her thinking when she was working on this album. Gray also addressed her remake of Wonder's Talking Book, a project she undertook for the album's 40th anniversary. "It was really a challenge to try to redo 'Superstition,'" Gray said. "So many people have done it and we didn't want to do it the same way as the original. That was a big deal. Other than that, we had a really good time." More with Macy here.
According to its website, the bed and breakfast has eight bedrooms, each of which was personally designed by Lambert - "It's Shabby Chic meets Rock & Roll," the website states. Lambert purchased the building last year - and though she renovated it, the history remains. Vintage photographs surround the bed and breakfast, and antique items collected by Lambert herself can be found on the premises. More details here.
Shot in a Pueblo village in southern California, the video finds Ballard driving into the town with a vintage Porsche convertible. Once settled, he straps on his guitar to play some tunes for the locals before he joins them to take shots of whiskey in the hot summer sun. When his dream girl approaches, he leaves to follow her. With the chorus of, "Every time you kiss me it's like sunshine and whiskey," it's no surprise that the kissing scenes take up the majority of the video. In an interview with Radio.com during record release week, Ballard talked about the title track to the album. "The way we arranged it, sonically speaking, that sound is going to be identifiable with the record," Ballard explained. "It's a fun song, 'Every time you kiss me, it's like sunshine and whiskey.' It's a summertime thing." Read more and watch the video here.
