Coldplay Deny Song Theft With Unoriginality Claim
AP reports: Coldplay has denied in federal court that it copied parts of Joe Satriani's music for its hit song, "Viva La Vida."

In a response filed in Los Angeles on Monday, attorneys for Coldplay's band members also argued that any similarities between "Viva La Vida" and Satriani's "If I Could Fly" weren't enough to warrant damages.

Satriani's song "lacks originality," Coldplay's response claims, and shouldn't receive copyright protection. [ouch thems fighting words! But what does that say about Coldplay's music?] - more on this story

Senate Anti Scalping Bill
Billboard reports: With the backdrop of this morning's second round of U2 tickets for their fall concert in New York, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer unveiled new legislation to improve fans' chances of getting tickets at face price and crack down on ticket resellers.

The legislation imposes a two-day waiting period from when tickets go on sale via an authorized sales channel before a ticket reseller can buy those tickets to put on the secondary market, according to a press release. [So fans will have to wait a couple days to pay the inflated prices for the tickets that were set aside for the scalpers. Typical Washington non-solution.]

Schumer's legislation is geared to help ensure fans get first crack at good seats at face value prices before ticket resellers buy up tickets to sell on the secondary market. [Again, does this prevent the "set asides" of choice tickets for the scalping market? No, but it gets a Senator some press. ] - more on this story

Victory Records reports: Victory Records has signed Los Angeles recording artist Otep. The first release under the new alliance is Otep's fourth full-length studio album "Smash the Control Machine". The new studio album will be released August 18, 2009.

Otep was originally signed after only four shows, without a demo, strictly on the power of the band's live performance. Sharon Osbourne offered the unsigned act a spot on the 2001 Ozzfest Tour leading to three appearances on the festival.

Otep had this to say about signing with Victory, "When I received the news of a possible Otep/Victory alliance I could swear I felt the sky tremble. This triumvirate (of myself, my manager Jack Ponti and Victory Records) is going to be a terrifying coalition for some and a righteous confederation for others." - more on this story

The Black Crowes Double Live Album
Kayos reports: Specializing in a free-spirited, blues-infused form of rock 'n' roll, The Black Crowes are an essential piece of rock music history. Through its Eagle Records subsidiary, Eagle Rock Entertainment is releasing a 2CD set from the rock luminaries. Warpaint Live is hitting the shelves on April. An accompanying DVD will be released later this year.

After ten years of touring around the world and 20 million records sold, The Black Crowes took a five year hiatus. In 2005 the band re-united and re-ignited. Three years later, they released Warpaint, their first new studio album in seven years. Warpaint Live is a celebration of this new album, performed before a sold-out Los Angeles crowd.

The first live Black Crowes release since 2006's critically acclaimed Freak 'n' RollInto The Fog CD and DVD (Eagle Rock), they took this fresh work of art and allowed fans to experience this new album in its entirety live, with extended versions of the Warpaint tracks. Throwing in a few classic songs, such as "Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye", as well as some previously unreleased covers, The Black Crowes deliver, proving that they are one of the most powerful and best live rock 'n' roll acts around. - more on this story

Singled Out: Sacred Oath
antiMusic reports: Welcome to Singled Out! where we ask artists to tell us the inside story of their latest single. Today Rob Thorne from Sacred Oath tells us about "Counting Zeros" from their brand new album. We now turn it over to Rob for the story:

I wrote Counting Zeros at the height of my frustration with our involvement in Iraq. I was seeing daily reports on the cost of the war, and the corporations that were profiting from it, and I was angry that our democracy had become enslaved to these powers.

Now we're in the middle of an economic meltdown, and as the greed and corruption are exposed, we're watching the same thing happening again. The very people that have brought us to ruin are collecting multi-million dollar bonuses for their actions. While Americans are losing their homes and jobs, these criminals are counting zeros.

Starting today iTunes is offering a free download of the song as their Discovery Download Pick Of The Week! You'll find it on the iTunes rock homepage. You can also get the full album for just $5.99 on iTunes five weeks before you can get it in stores. Learn more about the band and album - right here!
