Sammy Hagar Pleads with FDA to Allow Treatment For Drummer's Wife

(American Rock Scene) Former Van Halen and Montrose frontman Sammy Hagar is leading a group of other hard rock musicians in a campaign to get the Food and Drug Administration to approve an experimental treatment for a friend's brain cancer.

Hagar and friends sent a letter to FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research and Sammy asked the agency to allow Liza Cozad-Lauser to have access to "an experimental treatment involving the use of antineoplastons."

Cozad-Lauser is the wife of Hagar's drummer, David Lauser, and the other signatories on the letter share the heavy metal connection: Van Halen drummer Michael Anthony; bassist Jack Blades of Night Ranger and guitarist Joe Satriani, who has played with a range of bands including Deep Purple.

But Hagar and pals argue that medical treatment is a personal choice: "We are aware there are differences of opinion within the medical community regarding the efficacy and potential of antineoplastons in treating patients afflicted with this illness," they write. "We are not asking the FDA to take a side in this debate. We are writing to simply urge that Liza be allowed to receive the treatment she seeks while research on the potential of antineoplastons for potential widespread use continues." RHCP's Chad Smith and Will Ferrell Headed To Battle?

(Gibson) It's a long-standing fact that Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and actor Will Ferrell share an uncanny resemblance. The pair are both well aware that they look alike, and when Smith appeared on The Tonight Show with Chickenfoot in 2009, he wore a t-shirt with the text "I Am Not Will Ferrell." Well, now it seems the time has come for the two doppelgangers to meet in public.

Last week Smith posted a video video via Funny or Die where he joked about Ferrell's lack of drumming abilities, saying "I've seen your skills. You don't got 'em." This prompted Ferrell to respond via reddit: "Hi, Chad. Will Ferrell here. I saw your video and I graciously accept your invitation to a drum battle. If we can raise $300,000 for Cancer for College I will face off with you in the greatest drum vs. cowbell showdown the world has ever seen. We can do it on stage at a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert or in front of a mutually convenient public library. Your call. Also, would you rather fight a hundred duck sized ducks or one horse sized horse?"

Apparently the battle royale is a go, since Smith tweeted a picture while donating blood with the caption "Gettin juiced for the drum battle." Although there's no word yet on when and where this showdown will take place, it's certain to be one of the funniest events of the year. more on this story

Motley Crue Won't Be Releasing Final Album

(Classic Rock) Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars have insisted Motley Crue's final tour is the band's sole focus and there are no plans for a new album to go alongside the global tour.

Last month the band rolled out plans for a 72-show final tour in North America with overseas dates to follow in 2015. But the rock veterans will not be hitting the road with any new songs with Nikki Sixx casting doubt on the worth of any band in their position making an album in todays climate, citing the difficulty of getting radio play as the main barrier preventing bands reaching an audience.

Nikki Sixx tells Classic Rock in an interview printed in full next issue: "We've written some songs. But this is difficult to say and probably harder to hear: when you spend nine months working on an album, all the work that goes into it and recording it, mixing it, mastering it, then you release it and it falls on deaf ears. Radio is so f***in' formatted, if you don't have a banjo and a beard they're not playing you over here. If you're this kind of band at this stage of your career you can't be played on Active Rock; if you've been around for more than fifteen years you're classic rock, but classic rock radio doesn't play new music. You just think, "F***, man, this sucks."

"I have the belief that I would rather have less music reach more people through different opportunities." Read what some of those ideas are and stream a video interview here.

U2 Release 'Invisible' Video

(Radio.com) After teaming up with Bank of America to debut new song "Invisible" as a free charitable download with a high-profile spot during Super Bowl XLVIII, Irish rockers U2 have released the song's official music video.

While the band's charismatic frontman, Bono, has claimed that "Invisible" is not the first single from U2′s upcoming 13th studio album (tentatively scheduled for a summer release), the song has received all of the trappings of a single, like this splashy black and white performance video.

"We have another song we're excited about to kick off the album," Bono explained recently. "("Invisible") is just sort of a sneak preview to remind people we exist," adding that "it's the first one we finished" and that the group will continue working on the full-length "for a couple of months."

Don Henley Forces Okkervil River To Take Down A Cover Song

(Radio.com) In entertainment law circles, it's common practice for artists and their lawyers to defend one's intellectual-property. So aggressively, in fact, that some acts - particularly legacy acts with a large, frequently licensed discography - have a proverbial chip on their shoulder about copyright-law protections when it applies to their music.

Who could forget the absurdity of former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted, who started his Echobrain side project in 2000, getting sued by the Dallas band Echo Drain? Yes, those band names rhyme and yes, because of their similarity, representatives from Echo Drain sued Newsted. Unfortunately, Will Sheff of Austin, T.X. folk rock band Okkervil River has found himself in a similar predicament.

"Don Henley made me take down a cover of 'The End of the Innocence' that I'd had on there, which I'd rewritten - Don Henley made me take it down!" Okkervil River's lead singer-songwriter Will Sheff told The Music.

Sheff is referring to Golden Opportunities 3, one of three mixtapes in an ongoing covers series that Okkervil River has released for free download on its website.

"I really love 'The End of the Innocence' sincerely, and it's a real dick move, man," Sheff said. "I guess he's an old fashioned guy who doesn't understand I don't really get what his issue with it was, it's not like I was making money." more on this story

Seether Kick Off Recording Of New Album

(Banana 101.5) Seether bassist Dale Stewart has issued a video update for fans about the progress the band is making on their new studio album. Our news partner's Banana 101.5 have transcribed part of the video below:

"[We've] been here for about a week now. We've done most of the drum tracks. I think we have one more song left to do for drums. I've done bass on eight of the songs. I did seven in one day, which is a lot, but it's kind of cool to knock 'em out when you're in the groove or in the zone."

Speaking about the process, he adds, "It's been pretty painless so far, aside from a couple of hospital visits here and there and whatnot. But I think the songs are sounding good. I think it's going to be a good album and I'm pretty excited to hear how it's going to turn out." Check out the full video

The Beatles Inspired Dave Grohl To Become A Musician

(Classic Rock) Dave Grohl has never hidden his admiration for the Fab Four - and after playing The Beatles' Hey Bulldog during a TV special for the band the Foo Fighters frontman claims he wouldn't even be on stage but for Lennon, Macca and co.

His praise comes hot on the heels of the Grammys at which Grohl labelled Paul McCartney a "groundbreaking visionary". The cover which Grohl played alongside Electric Light Orchestra's Jeff Lynne was performed in front of McCartney, Ringo Starr and Yoko Ono who each appeared to thoroughly enjoy the performance.

Speaking after the show to Rolling Stone Grohl beamed: "If it weren't for The Beatles, I would not be a musician. From a very early age, I loved their groove and their swagger, their grace and their beauty, their dark and their light. The Beatles knew no boundaries, and in that freedom they seemed to define what we now know today as rock and roll, for my parents, for me and for my daughter, too." He had a lot more to say.

The Cult Announce Another Coachella Warm-Up Date

(hennemusic) The Cult have added an April 5th date at Humphrey's in San Diego to their spring US tour. The San Diego stop is one of two warm-up dates the band are playing before they appear at the Coachella festival in Indio, CA on April 11 and April 18; they're also scheduled to perform at The Regency Ballroom in San Francisco on April 3.

The Cult spent 2013 on the road playing the Electric 13 world tour, which coincided with the release of the 2-disc set, "Electric Peace." The collection pairs 1987's "Electric" with the group's abandoned "Peace" album, a project The Cult recorded as the follow-up to 1985's "Love." After recording the full album with producer Steve Brown, the group weren't happy with the final results, which seemed too polished.

The Cult then contacted producer Rick Rubin to remix the lead track, "Love Removal Machine", and Rubin agreed, but only on condition that the track was entirely re-recorded. Thrilled with the results of the Rubin sessions, the band abandoned the original "Peace" recordings and re-recorded the entire album in New York with him, resulting in "Electric." more on this story

Rolling Stones' Charlie Watts Ready To Retire

(Gibson) As The Rolling Stones are gearing up for a tour that will take them through United Arab Emirates, China, Japan, Macau, Australia, and New Zealand, Stones drummer Charlie Watts has expressed his desire to retire.

Dubbed "14 On Fire," the tour is yet another mini-tour with only 13 stops, following the successful "50 & Counting" tours of 2012, and 2013. Watts spoke to The Australian, where he explained the reason for these short tours, rather than a massive world tour:

"This is short compared to what we've done before - but it needs to be, I think, at our tender age. The thought of doing fifty shows, which was normal at one time for us to sign off on, that's quite daunting. Now we're doing that in little bits."

The 72 year old Watts also added: "If we don't do any more I'll be quite happy with that." Let's all hope Charlie doesn't get his way on this one, at least not until the Stones have had a chance to tour Europe once more. Aside from the UK, the band have not played any European dates since their "A Bigger Bang" tour, which ended in 2007. more on this story

Singled Out: From Athens We Fled Share The Story Behind 'Shine'

Today melodic heavy progressive groove metalers From Athens We Fled tells us about their latest single "Shine" which was released as a follow-up to their "CTL, ALT, KILL" EP. Here is the story:

After the band released our first EP 'Ctl Alt Kill' we went through a couple line up changes. We took on a new sleek, sexy drummer, and went down to one guitarist. It didn't take long to gather a feel for one another. We meshed together like a twelve year old boy and random boners or cereal and milk, whatever analogy you prefer.

After a couple shows with the new line up it was time for the real test. How would the band work together in writing new material? Amazingly well, it was like a four way match made in heaven. Everyone collaborated well, there was give and take, and it really set the tone for what would really become a great experience. With the attention span of a three year old we decided to focus on and record two single releases, Shine and Vanish. Shine was a real crowd-pleaser. With its sadistic lyrics, groovy guitar licks, sexy bass solo, and double pedal for days it had a lot to offer, so it was a no brainer to record that one.

To record Shine we went back to Michael Beck of Sound Vision Studios. He is a real pro at what he does and a pleasure to work with. He recorded the first EP, so we knew were going to get some high quality work for a good price. It was our drummer's first time in the studio, so it was a beautiful thing to watch him pop his studio cherry. Our guitarist flew his parts like a machine, and our bassist was left with only a few hours of recording. He plays bass so it didn't matter. All in all recording shine was a great bonding experience for the band. The time we shared working on the song is way more valuable than anything we could ever make off the song itself. You can check out the recording adventures here.

Think of all the horribly corrupted, evil people in this world. Anyone who has ever manipulated you for their personal gain, anyone who has lied to your face, or anyone who has treated you like a piece of sh*t to fill some void in their life. The scum that populates this earth.

Now imagine gathering all those people up. Breaking into their fake houses as they sleep, raiding their fancy corporate office's, and taking them against their will. Dragging them to their new fate as they scream and plead for help. Your conscious tells you to stop. There is an internal struggle as you fight against your own morals. Your conscious is telling you not to stoop to their level, and let them go. You're a good person and you want to let them go, but you remember. You remember the times they acted as your friend just to use you. You remember the pain and suffering you went through as they stepped on you for their own personal gain. You remember the deceit, so you march on.

You finally reach your destination. It is a twenty foot pit with an answer to your problem. The answer is a 400 pound lion with an innate thirst for blood. You made it this far and there is no turning back now. You cut their Achilles tendon to make them weak and vulnerable, but leave their hands untied to give them the slightest sense of hope. Your heart is pounding as you kick them into the pit. You watch as they fade into the darkness. You hear their shrieks and their cries for help, but all you can see is the glare from their eyes as you shine your light into the pit.

That my friends is Shine.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself here and learn more about the band right here!
