Day in Pop Report for 07/22/2014
Perry, who used to front the short-lived rock band 4 Non Blondes and went on to write hits for Pink and Christina Aguiliera, among others, was asked, "Linda, how do you feel about Beyonce changing one word on a song and getting writing credit. Does that bother you as a songwriter?" Perry's response: "well hahaha um thats not songwriting but some of these artists believe if it wasnt for them your song would never get out there so they take a cut just because they are who they are. but everyone knows the real truth even Beyonc. She is talented but in a completely different way." There's been much speculation over the years as to what a Beyonc songwriting credit actually means. On her 2011 album, 4, her opening track, "1+1″ bore quite a bit of resemblance to the The-Dream's song "Nothing But Love," but her name was added to the songwriting credits. Listen to both songs here. Earlier than that, in 2010, Frank Ocean (before he was famous) echoed Perry's later comments, tweeting, "It's a bad trend that artists try to muscle for credits on songs they had no part in writing. Writers just say no UNLESS it's Beyonce lol." That tweet has, unsurprisingly, since been taken down. more on this story
"I hope I can get one of these songs out in the next couple of weeks, just to have something up and running," West explained. "But I think most likely September. I go back and forth. Like, should it be September or should it be October? Should it be November? "When Beyonc was working on her last album, she took a while. I was thinking it could somehow come out in June, like Yeezus, and just kill it for the summer. But then I'm like, I have to work on Adidas and be with my child." The first part of the quote notes that, even if the rapper can't quite decide on the release date of his record, actual material could be hitting the airwaves sometime in the next few weeks. "And then I got a new song that's so good that the album has to be balanced against it," he added. "This song is a song that can be in the club like 'Don't Like' or 'N-as in Paris.'" More including the cover here.
Meek Mill's lawyers reportedly tried to get an emergency hearing scheduled so that he wouldn't have to wait until September, but that request has been denied by a judge. "All I'm asking for is a hearing to learn why (his jailing) is constitutional and they won't even give me that," Mill's defense attorney Christopher Warren said. Both Warren and fellow defense attorney Dennis Cogan now plan to file a plea to get a higher court to set an emergency hearing, claiming the rapper did not violate his probation as reported - and that a judge did not allow two hearings to provide him notice of his supposed violations before the jailing, which they say makes his time behind bars unconstitutional. more on this story
On the call sheet, the company, Sandi Alessi, explained they were looking for four different types of girls, which they unwisely ranked from A to D. In its description, "A" girls were listed as the "hottest of the hottest" and "must have real hair" while "B" girls should be "light skinned." However, the "D" girls were listed as having to be "African-American" and "poor, not in in good shape." Even more offensive, they considered Beyonc to only be a "B." Kristan Berona of Sandi Alessi took to Facebook late last week to apologize for the "offensive language to recruit women" "My intention was not to offend anyone and I'm so deeply sorry for not realizing the insensitivity in its content," she wrote. "I'm truly so sorry." Read Universal Pictures Reaction.
Using a gospel melody and an assortment of steadily building instruments, "Pray for Peace" sees McEntire encourage all to "pray for peace" while the images shift to people of all walks of life gesturing the song's two core tenants: prayer and peace. Lady Antebellum can even be seen getting in on the action, and Kelly Clarkson can be heard on the track. This marks the first music in over three years from the living legend, and as she describes it, it was the message of the song that really guided her back into recording. Watch the video here.
And a new album, yes, is what is expected, and soon. But while there haven't been many concrete details about the follow-up to 2012′s commercial and artistic success, good kid, m.A.A.d city, a few have been revealed in the Complex issue, including a possible release timeframe. In the interview, it is revealed that unlike good kid, the follow-up has not been planned years in advance, and at this point still does not have a cover or title. What he does have is 30 to 40 songs, and the expectation to release the collection in the fourth quarter of this year. So everyone better slow down making their best of 2014 lists when the time comes. The article also notes that Tae Beast and Sounwave of Digi+Phonics have provided most of the beats, which is appropriate as they are Top Dawg Entertainment's in-house producers, but that Dr. Dre has also been involved in some production. more on this story
Well, not exactly Urban himself, but a hologram of the singer. Fans throughout Australia can now see Urban perform his single "Somewhere in My Car" virtually at select malls around the country, according to Country Weekly. "I like the whole idea of that and what can be done with that," Urban said backstage at Good Morning America. The hologram will travel throughout several cities in Australia over the next few weeks. Watch a clip of his virtual performance of "Somewhere in My Car" here.
The trio keep their lyrics aspirational dropping lines like "Nobody do it better/ All my brothers tryna get some cheddar/ We all want our cut like the Shredder" over a stadium-sized laser synth beat from Kill The Noise and Madsonik. Here, the trio are at their most creative, subtly dropping references in ways that wouldn't feel out of the ordinary on any of their solo songs. They even find a way to rhyme one of the Turtles' names with a luxury vehicle: "Me and my bros come together for the dough/ Bought the orange Lamborghini/ Call it Michelangelo." It's easy to imagine that Juicy J took the lead on this collaboration, given that he has Oscar-winning experience writing for film. Back in 2006, he won an Academy Award with DJ Paul and Frayser Boy for Best Original Song for the track "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp," which he wrote for Hustle & Flow. Listen to "Shell Shocked" here.
The single's artwork features a photo of the tennis great in his notorious mullet days likely shot at Wimbledon in 1992. Leave it to Diplo to find a comedy pop-culture tie-in. This morning Lorde tweeted a photo of herself and Diplo, alerting fans the track was on its way. . Diplo's remix is another in the long line of his female collaborations that include Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Beyonce Jennifer Lopez and, most recently, Madonna. more on this story
"Yeah, I'm pretty happy right now," said the singer in a press release. "Everybody is looking for that one person who lets them be themselves and, whether we want to admit it or not, pushes us to be a better person. This song couldn't say it any better and I'm glad I got to be the person to sing it." "Who I Am With You" was written by Marv Green, Jason Sellers and Paul Jenkins. In an interview with Radio.com at this year's ACM Awards, Young explained why he decided to select the song for his album A.M. "It's the antithesis of the first single off the record ["Aw Naw"] in that the first one was the love song to tequila," Young told Radio.com. "It was just like, 'Let's go out and drink and have a good time.'" more on this story
According to Reuters, the suit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles last Wednesday (July 16), with Ultra having discovered "dozens" of unauthorized uses of the label's music in Phan's videos. Ultra is still combing her back catalog of clips for more instances of their tunes being used. Among the Kaskade tracks cited in the suit include a remix of "4Am," which can be heard in Phan's video, "Night Life Favorites." Phan rose to prominence for her makeup tutorials which guide viewers through the process of achieving the looks of such pop culture icons as Barbie and Lady Gaga. Those two clips alone have generated close to 100 million views to date. more on this story
The latter revealed the news in an Instagram post, noting that the movie will come out next year - in fact, in just a few short months. "Pt. 2. Comin Jan. 2015!" he added in the photo's caption. Currently, there's no word on a specific release date other than the month of January and whether or not the sequel will simply follow up the original in terms of plot. more on this story
It's your typical mansion with hot girls everywhere party song. So, one step up in production values from what the kids today call pornography, minus the sex having. Things get particularly interesting during the glow-in-the-dark clothes scenes. Following that is "The Nation." The track, featuring Jake Lambo, hits the streets of Boston, getting a video that couldn't be more different from "So What." In fact, it's more of a scan of the city of Boston than it is a look at B.o.B., which is unexpected. And finally comes "Get Right" featuring Mike Fresh. The song is a summer jam, and the video suits it accordingly. Directed by PhillyFlyBoy, it's a backyard BBQ kind of thing with saturated sunlight and red Solo cups galore. Watch the videos here.
Lewis' latest album, produced in part by Ryan Adams, deals with loss, namely the passing of her estranged father and her band Rilo Kiley, which broke up after nearly 15 years together. These two caused her to start suffering from terrible insomnia that at one point kept her awake for five straight nights. But the album isn't sad, instead, it takes a look at all the trappings of adulthood, specifically being a lady without a baby. In Radio.com's interview with Lewis, she talked about the origin of that line on the Beck-produced track, "Just One of The Guys," where the 38-year-old songstress shocks and awes with the line, "When I look at myself, all I can see/ I'm just another lady without a baby." More from Lewis and a link to the album stream here.
Tesfaye later croons about how he can sell-out London's 02 arena at his own speed and go home with any girl in attendance: "Bring your girl to my show, give her floor seats/Then she go downtown like she owe me." Yeah, maybe, you want to think twice about bringing your girl to his little upcoming tour with Jhen Aiko and Schoolboy Q, which kicks off September 19 in Brooklyn, NY. Check out the song here.
Pinkett Smith said the key to their relationship is friendship. "Your partner has to be your best, best, friend. And he's my best friend." Jada had some sound advice on keeping your marriage strong. "You have to have kind of a warrior mentality. You have to be a solider for love. You have to be able to withstand tough times and just because the tough times come doesn't mean it's time to stop it means it's time to dig in." Pinkett Smith also gushed about her upcoming 20th wedding anniversary. "We're going to be celebrating 20 years in two years, so we're starting to plan now for a big 20th year." The actress is playing Fish Mooney on new FOX series "Gotham," and said it's a fun character to play. "She's pretty ruthless and violent. She has quite a temper." more on this story
The clip follows a pair of married scientists at "Jaxx Industries," with the duo hard at work creating the "Twerk-Bot 1.0," a fully animated torso that twerks like an inspired cross between Miley Cyrus and Iggy Azalea. The husband scientist has an added incentive in seeing the twerking robot fully realized, as his wife informs him that they can't have sex until the project is completed. Utilizing a lab packed with modern technologies, the pair analyzes the gyrating buttocks of actual dancers to get the specs on their twerking robot just right. The finished product comes with a myriad of features, including a USB port, triple-jointed pneumatics and the ever-important A.H.P., or Anti-Hip Lock, which it achieves thrusts of up to 124 TPM, which we're assuming stands for "twerks per minute." It's as opulent as you might expect - especially for a song with a casual title like "T-Shirt." In the video clip, Future gets chauffeured around his hometown Atlanta in three different vehicles: a private jet, a white Rolls Royce, and a black Bentley. He hangs out with his friends Wiz Khalifa, Mike WiLL Made It and Young Scooter. Shops for some sneakers. Poses for pictures with fans. And yet he still finds time to play a show. Future delivers on the song's title in the fashion department. While the rapper surprisingly only wears one full-on t-shirt, he makes sure it's a fancy one, emblazoned with the women's high-fashion label Cline. more on this story
