Day in Pop Report for 11/13/2014
Now, one of the only voices that matter have weighed in on the cover. Kardashian's husband, Kanye West, took to Twitter to voice his opinion on the photo that set social media on fire. What did he have to say? West tweeted the cover and very succinctly gave his endorsement by adding "#ALLDAY." One assumes the all caps are to express his enthusiasm. Read more here.
Contestants on the long-running game show answered five questions about the star in the category of "& Beyonc" as part of the "Tournament of Champions." What dark mysteries of the BeyHive were revealed? Well, answers included Destiny's Child, Blue Ivy, Cadillac Records, "Single Ladies" and "Drunk in Love" - kids' stuff for anyone with a passing familiarity with the entertainer. here.
The seizures began in 2011, after the release of Pitbull's "Give Me Everything," which features Ne-Yo. Since then, any time she hears his music in public she's liable to experience a sudden seizure. This has kept Fennessey away from a job, and forces her to wear ear plugs every time she goes to the supermarket. In the interview with the Daily Mail, Fennessy described her condition: "[Doctors] are saying it could possibly be something in the tone of his voice, something like that, but it doesn't happen when I hear Usher, or people like him who have a very similar sound. It is only him, only Ne-Yo. The story doesn't end there. Read more here.
Eminem kicked off his set by saying, "Happy motherf-ing Veterans Day," before launching into his new song, "Guts Over Fear" off his upcoming two-disc release, ShadyXV, out Nov. 24, which celebrates 15 years of his record label, Shady Records. The F-bombs continued to fly throughout his set, but, he did make time for some curse-free thank yous. Eminem dedicated "I'm Not Afraid" to "all the veterans in here tonight, and everyone currently serving in our armed forces and also to the ones who didn't make it home." "I just want to say thank you for your sacrifices," he told the crowd. "This song's for you." Watch Eminem's full curse laden performance at the Concert For Valor, featuring Rihanna, here.
He has already shared "Nickel Rock," a collaboration with Boosie Badazz, among other tastes. Now, however, he's offering another preview of the album with a higher profile guest: Jay Z. "Movin' Bass" is the latest joint effort between the two artists; they've also collaborated on Jay's "F***WithMeYouKnowIGotIt," Ross' "The Devil is a Lie," DJ Khaled's "They Don't Love You No More" and Kanye West's "Monster," among other tracks. Jay does the hook on the NSFW Timbaland-produced song, with Ross taking all of the verses. Listen here.
He took to Facebook first. "Ready to make some #FriendsInNewPlaces," he said to the Facebook world with a 45-second video on his new Facebook page. "Well, I guess it's official," he said in the video. "We're now on Facebook. I really wasn't sure about this at the start but then a friend of mine said something that just made all kinds of sense. "She said, 'Think of it more as a conversation.' I like that. But I'm already finding out on my own that it's wiping out the walls between you and me and I really like that. It allows us into each other's worlds, I guess in my case: the hotel room. When I think of things I want to post, I want to post cool stuff, slick stuff, neat stuff. But most of the stuff I'm going to post is going to be raw stuff, like this. 'Cause this is just who I am. So if this is just a conversation, then I say let the conversation begin." Hours after he posted his first video on Facebook, he also opened a Twitter account and posted a selfie before joining in a Twitter chat. Later, he'd post his first Vine as well with some help. Check out the tweet and the video here.
Radio.com caught up with Bryan last month at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Calif., where he was performing his final U.S. show for 2014. After roughly a year and a half of performing his hit singles "Crash My Party," "That's My Kind of Night" and "Roller Coaster," Bryan says he's itching to get into finding songs for his next album. In fact, Bryan says he's "1000 percent" already thinking about that next release. "The past two months, [we've been] really ramping up the writing; really starting to think about ideas and what I want to say. We're all up in the middle of it," Bryan says of his next album. "We're getting ready to go in and cut a few songs and see what we've got. I'm very excited about the process and getting the next album going." Bryan works with a stable of songwriters who are in his crew, including his 2014 tour opener Cole Swindell and his previous tour mates Florida Georgia Line. His go-to core group has also included Ashley Gorey, Dallas Davidson and Michael Carter. But new kids making a name around Nashville shouldn't be afraid to submit to Bryan's camp for consideration; in fact, he's looking for hot new writers. Read more here.
Does this mean he'll do an extra-special version of "Fever" when he's in town? The shows take place Jan. 22-24 at TD Garden, and tickets go on sale Friday, Nov. 21 at 10 a.m. ET via Ticketmaster, by phone (1-800-745-3000) or online. All tickets are $66.50, which includes taxes and fees. Brooks is currently on a world tour with Yearwood, which kicked off this past September in Chicago. He is currently in Minneapolis, Minn., and also has upcoming shows in Greensboro, N.C., Little Rock, Ark., Tulsa, Okla., and St. Louis, Mo. Read more here.
Darkness On the reworked rendition of "Come Away," the pair channel '90s R&B with their silky flows. Sean hops on the spaced-out melody set to a clapping beat to boast about his women and bank statements - "God damn I'm so fine / Getting green cause it's go time / You know those like supermodel girls you like? / Yeah I'm chilling with those kind" - and Blake seductively croons his pleas to a lady friend. If there's something familiar-sounding about the track, that's because the hook riffs on A Tribe Called Quest's "Find a Way" much like Ciara brought back Ghost Town DJs' "My Boo" in her song "Body Party." The track was originally recorded in 2012, the year Elijah wrote Usher's hit "Climax," but it's just being released now. Listen to it here.
The British singer uploaded a short video of himself, time stamped 1997 making him around 4 years of age, in his bathtub performing a rap. Chalk it up as proof that the "Stay With Me" singer has long had an interest in music. Elsewhere, Smith's reach and influence was recognized by the Independent, which placed him at No. 7 on its Rainbow List, which seeks to celebrate "lesbian, bisexual, gay, and transgender people who make a real difference." During the promotional rounds, he revealed it was written about his love for a guy, making him a rarity - the pop star who comes out at the beginning of his career," the paper noted. This honor follows Smith's multiple nominations for the People's Choice Awards on Nov. 5. Check out the video here.
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman took on the seasonal classic "A Marshmallow World," which dates back to 1949 and was first made a hit by Bing Crosby, though Darlene Love revamped the song with Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound" help 20 years later on A Christmas Gift for You from Philles Records. Perhaps not surprisingly, Karen O's rendition is a much janglier lo-fi affair. It's also much more childlike, with her nasally drawl, which is fitting for a children's ad that riffs on Alice in Wonderland. Read more and listen here.
Mendes announces himself with his latest music video in support of the single "Something Big," which was released late last week. The something big seems to be Mendes himself, who is at the center of an impromptu neighborhood parade, the soul of a party on a football field, and still manages to showcase his accomplishments as a guitar player and dancer. If this video accomplishes nothing else, the viewer leaves knowing he can do it all - or at least quite a lot more than stand around and sing. Mendes as the "something big" isn't hyperbole - anticipation for his video is so great that it is currently a trending topic on Twitter for the U.S., bested only by #HappyVeteransDay and outperforming a hash tag about Harry Styles of One Direction's hair. That is, in fact, something big. Watch it here.
Tyga took to Twitter this morning to announce that The Gold Album: 18th Dynasty will be out on Dec. 23. He did not, however, make clear whether the album will come out on his own Last Kings Music imprint or via Young Money/Cash Money. Last month, he called out Nicki Minaj and Drake and threatened to leave the label after they wouldn't give him a release date - perhaps that threat worked. Read more here.
The 30-minute film will be debuted with screenings in Atlanta, New York and Los Angeles. The soundtrack will feature eight songs, five of which are new. Two remixes from YG's debut album, My Krazy Life, will be included in addition, as will a live performance track. YG announced the news on Twitter, accompanied by what appears to be the album cover. Check it out and read more here.
The artist, who's been notoriously late to the Internet in many respects, whether withholding from Youtube, refusing to own a cell phone or joining Twitter only two summers ago, didn't take his own photo with a smart phone or iPad, as most selfies are taken nowadays. Prince used a professional-grade camera and a mirror. From the looks of his selfie, it's just as much of an event as you'd assume. For the occasion, Prince set up two lighting rigs and, even though Prince is almost always wearing makeup, it's just as likely that he had himself done up for the occasion. Read more here.
This time, they're a pair of Brits in dysfunctional relationships surrounded by some very sci-fi turns of event. In "Outside," Harris and Goulding play two halves of two different relationships that are not going well: there is fighting, there is shouting, there is the throwing of objects. The costuming, makeup and even set design are meant to lead us to believe they are chavs, lower class and rather uncool Brits. The reason this stereotype is invoked is unclear because the director, frequent Harris collaborator Emil Nava, takes things in the direction of special effects with implied sci-fi origins - as is frequently his style. Basically, stuff (dishes, a motorbike, Goulding herself) hangs in the air for no reason, a la one of the visual payoffs in Super 8. Is it aliens? Are Goulding and Harris doing this with their minds because their bad relationships are putting them into an altered, higher mental state? Or could this be the personification of being on the "outside" of society? Watch it here.
The rapper honored the team with a visit to their locker room. Coach Butch Davis introduces Jon by playing his unimpeachable "Turn Down For What," before bringing the star out from the wings to thunderous applause. Jon gives the team a brief pep talk: "We gotta tighten it up a little bit - we got Kentucky coming up, and I just wanted to stop by and give y'all some love right here in the flesh and commend y'all for what you been doing this year." Coach Davis announces that they're going to give Jon a chance to watch the third down drill at practice, and then a dance party breaks out. Watch it here.
As reported by CoS, OFWGKTA fan Aaron McCann flew in from Ireland to check out this past weekend's Odd Future Carnival, and while in California, McCann decided to do a stand-up comedy set at Hollywood's HaHa Comedy Club's open mic night. McCann invited Tyler to the set via Spring.me because the Goblin rapper inspired him to try his hand at comedy, and to many's surprise, the rapper actually showed up to check it out. "Congrats," Tyler said when invited to the stage. "This man came all the way from wherever the f-k Ireland is, and he followed his dreams. And he's f--g here. With that courage, you don't know where the f-k you can end up." Watch here.
