 The Great Game - Self-Titled

To say that the music on The Great Game's self-titled album is all over the map is an understatement. It can go from the Euro-folky sounds of "Science," to the charging guitar rock of "Religionism,". The latter song goes into a folk-ish horn thing, which then introduces a shouted vocal. It's like the aural equivalent to one of those Resse's Peanut Butter Cup commercials where, in this case, a gypsy folk outfit crashes into a van containing a punk rock group. But instead of exiting vehicles and coming to blows, they decide to make unusually beautiful music together.One called "The Turning Of The Wheel Of Dhamma" has no rock pretenses at all, as it slides to a drunken, jazzy groove that sounds like something Tom Waits might sing. Brass horns accompany throughout. This act loves a lot of different musics - maybe too many. But if you have restless listening ears, this project ought to keep you busy for a while.
