Webcasters Cry Foul Over

(PR) As a reaction to the outcry of internet radio stations about the recently-proposed royalty rate hike, SoundExchange offered up the Small Webcaster Settlement Act (SWSA) on May 22nd as a cushion for these companies. This supposed act of grace by SoundExchange, the company that collects and distributes royalties from internet radio, would give small internet webcasters three more years before having to pay the increase, while the �bigger� internet stations would still be accountable to shell out their amplified royalty fees in mid-July.

By allowing small internet radio stations until 2010 to pay the more-than-doubled royalty rates, the SWSA would give these companies more time to develop their business. Being that internet radio is very young, it only makes sense; their business plans are immature and their revenue potential is not yet realized. As of now, many internet radio companies are not prepared to pay this inflated amount.

Tom Cheney, owner of idobi Radio, dares to say they never will be.

�Their proposal would only delay the current state of affairs,� said Cheney. Idobi Radio, an internet radio station that is well known for shows like Man of the Hour (hosted by Simple Plan�s Sebastian Lefebvre and Patrick Langlois of Role Model clothing) and DJ Rossstar�s Punk Rock Show, has been around for eight years and has thousands of devoted listeners.[see full story for more] - Click here for the Full Story
